NBN - Our biggest bill. Who are you with??

    Hey all,

We got a letter in the mail last week saying NBN is ready to go and they're going to cut out existing line within 18 months so get your **** sorted.

Just going through the telco's and they all seem fairly similar price wise.

Pretty disappointed in the pricing tbh. The cheapest and slowest option is actually slower than my current ADSL2+ speed of 25mbps for $60/month and for the same price. So that sounds like a great multi billion $ investment by our government... The new slow speed is only 10mbps....

So if you want the new speed they keep bragging about being 4x as fast you need to go to the top spec 100mbps, which will set you back $110p/m making this the single largest bill in our entire household. Even more than our rates...

Pretty annoyed really as my only options are to pay more for less speed or pay nearly double the price for 4x the speed.... Sounds like the worst internet upgrade in history to me.

Anyway seeing as the prices all look very similar jw who your preference is from experience???

We can't use our existing provider, Iinet as they're not available in my area.. Our choices are TPG Optus or Telstra

    Sorry for the whinge.

    Russ

Its not a whinge its a truthful observations...

Its bites my arse to, as you say.... you get to pay the same for a SLOWER speed on the NBN or if you want the speed you have to *cough* pay more.... its all very conveniently NOT mentioned in the big tax funded adverts about how much better off we will be once on the NBN

NBN installs stopped in the next street where I am, one HALF a block away!! In years gone past I would have cried or moved 6 houses away just to get the "high speed NBN"..... nowdays I'm thankful I missed the fast boat and hopefully wont need to worry about it for a while yet.

Yeah, changing from fibre to the house to fibre to the node and then copper to the premises has ruined the NBN.

When the NBN became the only option in our suburb, we decided to not have any form of home connection. It is just too expensive.

It will go down as being the biggest waste of $30B ever made by our government.

I'd rather keep my existing ADSL2.... If i had that option I would be.

Daz I thought i must have read it wrong the first time i went over it. Then i checked my current internet speed and sure enough i have a current line speed on ADSL of 25mbps downloading at 10mbps... Meaning it is currently FASTER than NBN will be unless i pay for a "Boost Pack" WTF is that.

This is another good option. I mean if they're saying we have to spend $110 on our home internet, why not ditch it and up your phone data and possibly get a sim for your tablet too. Could do both and gain functionality...

The reasons for the high price are:-

    1. The government is only lending the money - they have to operate profitably, and pay back the cost.

    2. If you actually got that line speed on ADSL2+, you are in very select company; NBN is intended to provide this as a minimum speed to all households, not just those close to exchanges with good cabling. The cost of the project reflects this. If they just cherry-picked the easy to service and cheap areas like TPG are doing, they could provide cheaper internet for those select residences, and nothing for the rest of us.

    3. The 121 POIs are a significant factor in the high price - the cost to the RSP of these is very significant, especially for smaller, innovative (and potentially cheaper) RSPs.

Remember that, assuming you have a landline, the cost of this should be significantly less than it was previously - no line rental.

So what they should have done is just upgraded the cabling for people who's internet was lagging behind and left the rest alone because it's only a marginal increase if any at all for me.

I also pay no line rental, Iinet bought out something called Naked ADSL about 2 years ago which involved them going into the exchange and modifying the line to be data only. You then pay no line rental... No different to connecting NBN which has no line to rent.... Only supports Voip.

I do understand you justifying the price John, just doesn't change that it's a waste of money if nobody can afford it....

A lot of people are very unhappy because the providers are failing to provide the speeds that were promised, and the provoders are making excuses and are blaming consumers and others for their failure. Really, if a provider promises a certain service, but the delivered service fails to meet the promised standard, then that's grounds for a refund, I reckon. Consumer protection laws have to mean something, surely.
By world standards, our internet has always been poor. I had 100 Mbs nine years ago in Thailand, then I came back here and was shocked by how backward we were in this supposedly developed country.
