Old Polly Perkins usually start easily without using glow plugs (in Qld. anyway) but if they are really badly worn a lot of ether needs to be used. We had a Commer truck with a 6-354, 6 speed overdrive box and two speed diff. Gee, it was a good eight tonner. Very fast for the day, early 1960's, with a top of just over 70 mph in o/d and light. Perk 4-108 gave sterling service in construction equipment and marine and would start and run well until totally buggered just like the old Detroit two strokes.

The 6-306 in my tractor does not have glow plugs - has a gadget that vaporises fuel with a heating element and sprays it in the manifold - I don't know if it works, as it starts anyway in any weather, without using it!
