    A lack of distributed storage.

Power plants not plugged in, break down when asked to do their contracted jobs.
    correct, has been addressed
Victorian connector in a particular state of upgrade/repair.
    not special
And you're telling me this isn't a unique combination of circumstances? It will play out in exactly the say way next time we get a 1 in 50 year storm? You should get out more.

the only thing we're missing is lack of inertia in the grid.

Which can be, will be, already is (elsewhere) provided by by electronics. Hell, even the new Hornsdale wind farm will be trialling FCAS services later this year. And you think 1 in 50 year storms aren't special? Classic. SA wasn't considered tornado alley until this storm. Will AEMO roll back the wind farm protection settings next time one of these storms is forecast, just so they can run and hide again?

    ..........................

I'm beginning to think windfarm syndrome is affecting SA taxpayers more than anyone thought. If you think you're afflicted please check out the handy chart on this esteemed doctor's authorative article.

electronics is no substitute for revolving metal. however Hornsdale trialing FCAS is cool.

1 in 50 year storm mean there is two percent chance of that storm happening each year. doesn't mean it will only happen once every 50 years. in the past 12 months, SA has had 4 1in30, 1in50 or 1in100 weather events.

tornados arnt uncommon in SA. we're not like the US though. BOM dropped the ball by not putting tornados on the forecast. any novice meteorologist could of seen it coming. we're still not considered tornado alley.

regardless, tornadoes arnt why the system failed.
if AEMO went and ordered all the wind farms off for that evening, the grid would not have collapsed.

Evidence of management failure, right there. According to your theories, anyway.

not really. it's not been done before and it's not in the operations manual.
    maybe it should be.

We can do this you know...

I grew up around sheepstations in western NSW and SA and every one of them had wind power, sometimes several wind generators, usually a small diesel generator for back up , a kero fridge and choofah and or solar hot water system. It was all low voltage.

Guees what? We are now able to do what our grandparents did. We have technology. We forgot about this for 75yrs.

We can all have power on the roof, a wind generator , and a backup generator, most of our lighting is low voltage again and we have very efficient solar hot water systems...and all of you in Aulro know how easy it is run a fridge on a solar panel.

as they say, what goes around comes around

it is very simple and easy not to rely on the unreliable (for whatever proffered reason)power grid and do it yourself.

    THEN YOU CAN'T BLAME ANYONE.

Er could you give us a cost per Kwh for such a system.

What worries me is the mass application of resources to such an undertaking will maybe benefit some importers , but result in a reduction of consumer spending in other areas, say food and lodging.

It will be interesting to see the results of the SA social experiment on unemployment and consumer spending seeing that generator sales apparently have skyrocketed.

I recall the results of my research on the type of hot water system to buy some years ago. Then and I believe now nothing came close over 10 years to the old off peak element system.

    Regards Philip A

Interesting that the frequency of 'thunder days' is increasing in Adelaide for whatever reason, but pretty stable everywhere else.

    ummm Philip A, no I can't.

Up until recently, no one gave a rats arse about cost/kw , until people started using it as an argument against renewables.

My post was really to simply illustrate that we are doing nothing new that our forefathers didn't do....ie not relying upon one source for our energy.

It worked perfectly then, it works better now.

Now, let's get on with it and stop blocking the road.
