its great solar can meet min demand during the day but going to need a lot of batteries for the night.


and is demand response just turning off big power users? that not finding new capacity, that forcibly reducing demand.

I would have said knee jerk policy by politicians rather than design by engineers

One day, after many many many attempts at education, you may finally understand that daytime solar is only one part of the solution. Storage, synfuels and non daylight supply can be organised in many different ways. Do some reading.

Who's talking about "forcing"? People are getting paid to reduce consumption at critical load times because it's cheaper than finding the equivalent amount of peaking capacity. Your factory makes $10K an hour making dooflangies? Get paid $12K to turn off the production line and give the workers an extra hour off or pay $20K to find a peaker to supply the kilowatts. A distinct no brainer.

so we need to have 2 systems, one for day, one for night. that adds duplication and cost.

Not really. How much does the concept of "zero input cost" mean to you? Solar plus storage is already cheaper to build than new coal and it's only getting cheaper. Running costs are much lower when you don't have to constantly dig up filthy black crap to burn. Solar plus storage is loads easier than mining + transport + burning it to make steam + using steam to spin turbines + distributing it many hundreds of km from where the plant is.
