p,s. A permit was required for the "Old Gunbarrel" route for safety purposes but I didn't go there.

A permit is required when travelling through Aboriginal land such as the Great Central Road, Tjukaruru Road (Docker River) and most of the roads-tracks leading off the Outback Way between Laverton and Yulara.

If a permit is required to travel through privately owned land then I'm quite happy to pay it, assuming the funds go to help the landowners. However, in other cases when public money goes to upgrade a road through private land, the route is usually resumed to become public land, with a payment to the landowners. I wonder if that would be a condition of federal funding for the Outback Way.
