My niece was sorting herself a Medicare Card in Centrelink on Wednesday. In the queue in front of her was a bloke who was trying to work out his new Mobile Phone. He had been in Jail for the past 14.5 Years and hadn't seen a smart phone.
Silly Niece asked why he had been in Jail (Spelt that way because it is closest to the original old French word.)
He said that his Sister was being abused by a Paedophile in a foster home, so he removed the mans genitals, stiffed them in his mouth and killed him. This would be described by most as a ghastly crime committed by an Aboriginal on a White man, if the whole history was not known.
His wife was terrified, as he had dug a grave for her in the back yard in case she thought she would give him up, which, eventually she did.
My question is: What might this bloke have done had he thought the punishment for his crime was going to be death? The trail of destruction could have been long and terrible. The Media and the Shock Jocks would have been in a frenzy.
I don't and never will support the Death Penalty as I see it as just another Murder, and a wast. How much would Criminologist know about criminals if all the best subjects were taken out at the earliest convenience?

    Very true.
I see they've decided to have a go at rehabilating Dylan Voller instead of just leaving him locked up to be further abused until he is due for release in October, which is smart.
What is there to lose by giving him a chance to change? Even if it fails it's no worse than the alternative of doing nothing.

And if that doesn't work, and He continues "on his merry way",....what would you then advocate Disco?

That depends on his behavior. I can't predict the future. He's a damaged kid so all we can hope for is some improvement as he matures and discovers life outside prison. Extreme punishment has already failed, so others options must be worth a try, surely?

There is a fair bit for someone to lose,he may now wreck a few peoples lives, just hope it isn't mine.

But then what do you do?

Trying to rehabilitate is what it is all about, but from what i have seen around the youth detention centres, correctional facilities, over many years, this very rarely happens.

In fact the detention centres seem to being their best to just prepare the residents for the next stage in their lives, which is the correctional facilities.

The situation we now have in the detention centres around here has only happened in the last few years and has got gradually worse.Isnt this proof that the system as it is now is not working, but the previous system did?

I know what has changed, but obviously the "professionals" that have made the changes do not want to admit that what they have done is not working, and need to make some urgent changes or the present situation will continue.

The amount of money spent on repairing property after acts of vandalism in these youth detention centres is absolutely ridiculous, very little of what actually happens gets into the media.

As has been said this money could be much better spent in education, hospitals, etc, etc

I'm not sure I believe it either Bob. It's a second hand anecdote from a person of suspect sanity, but that it's plausible is enough to make it a hypothetical situation to ponder over.
    Cheers, Billy.

It seems people have pretty much had enough. My brother was woken last week at 3:00am as someone was banging on the front door. He went out to find his neighbour there .............. base ball bat in hand .... Neighbours wife could hear something outside so he went out and kids had broken into there cars.... They ran for there lives before he got any batting practice in though
