The pollies usual answer is to increase the maximum sentence knowing full well that judges and magistrates rarely hand down the max.
    Weak pollie posturing.

Maybe this thread needs to be moved to the CA section, It can only end up in tears here.

Bob, I thought that was pretty good. I only watched part 1.
Interestingly, one of the officers in charge says that if discipline is not adhered to, progressively more "unpleasant" disciplinary measures are introduced, until it is!
I reckon that sort of stuff would be worth a try.
Can't see any reason why this would need to go to C.A.....the subject film is a good idea IMHO.

Nope. I can 100% say that escalating the 'treatment ' will in some cases totally break and distort some people. In my opinion they will either manufacture monsters , or fix them.
There is no 'easy' solution however this aint one of them...
There are personality types that can turn even more phsycotic under these circumstances, and with their military training cab be a lethal mix when eventually inflicted on the public.
Treatment such as this did a lot of damage to some...

"There are personality types that can turn even more phsycotic under these circumstances," I think you're right. Moons ago in the UK I had a very good mate, quiet bloke who was a good back-up at times.
As yoofs will do though we did things we shouldn't have done and one night nicked a scooter to get home after a night on the ****. He dropped me off and went on his way but got caught by the cops when he came out of a toilet. No helmet no gloves on a bitter cold night was asking for the cops to get suspicious.
In the end he got 6 months in a reform school in Scotland where he reckoned they didn't stop running from before dawn 'til dusk. All ex military men ran it.
Anyway some years later he bashed his wife over the head with a hammer then cut her throat with a HACKSAW from his boys carpentry set!!!!
Got a term of "For the rest of your natural life" in Broadmoor hospital for the criminally insane.
The nut doctors reckoned various things led him to it, one was not being allowed to join the navy and the other was those little things like a girl nicking off with his mate (me sometimes) and giving him the shove. Natural teen behaviour.
All built up in his mind then BANG! Something wife did or said sent him real crazy.
I don't know if hard punishment gets improvements or not, certainly didn't with Ted who was obviously a bit sick in the head anyway.
    AlanH.

PS. I'd reserve the real hard treatment ("hung until you're dead") for kiddy fiddlers.

In Brisbane late 1940's to 1960's there was a 2nd. AIF veteran who was well known in veterans circles. I was told he received brutal punishment in the notorious glasshouse in Palestine. He made it his life's work to sniff out former provos and bash them in retaliation. The RSL advocates usually got him off with a modest fine or sentenced to the rising of the court pleading "war neuroses". I have not heard of him for many years. I am sure that like most WW2 vets he has long departed.

Well, that is not too far off what we went thru during our 4 years at the apprentice training school, HMAS Nirimba, from the age of 15. Locker inspections, kit musters, doubling everywhere in winter, running around the airfield at Schofields before dawn, with our bedding over our shoulders. Marching up from the ,machinery shops in summer, [about a km] then told we weren't marching good enough, and go back & do it all over again, with a regulating PO following on a push bike. Running round & round a parade ground with rifle above the head, only stopping to do 10 push ups, or star jumps. And if you didn't come to the halt and ground the rifle properly, another 5 circuits of the parade ground. Ahhhh, they were the days. Cold showers in winter, when the temperature was around zero, it wasn't prison, but some times it felt like it. Did it have a bad effect on us? Can't say for sure, but you never get lonely, with all the voices in your head. What was that, Mother?
I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

Bob im glad you didn't turn into some kind of society 'authority ' hating serial killer.. i can definitely see the possibility of that happening to some types... take the FMJ scene where tge bullying and constant stress caused a murder and suicide. Yes yes its only a movie however that is also a scene reenacted all over the world on a daily basis i would say. These places and that kind of treatment make me sick to the core. Unnecessary and abusive, borderline animalistic .
