Locking up youths in centres with nothing to do but get bored is a recipe for trouble. Family breakdown and high youth unemployment as technology destroys entry level jobs is leaving an unskilled generation without hope, just as has happened in Aboriginal society.

Destroying people for vengeance has little chance of reforming anyone. Anyone who has been to Port Arthur and read about the failed isolation prison based on the ideas of Elizabeth Fry would know that that approach was a total disaster which led to riots and suicides, yet here we are 150 years later repeating the same mistakes.

Instead of punishing them through isolation, they should be in programs which encourage them to reform their habits and learn useful skills. People need to see a path to a better future if they are to want to change their lives. However governments have slashed funding for TAFE and social reform programs. Now we are seeing the results and they are very serious.
In principal I agree with you, however, there comes a time when we need to lock these people up for the safety of the rest of society. Having lived in Townsville recently and seeing what is going on there with car thefts and home invasions it is too much. I drive on the roads with my young girls in the car and I worry that some ice addicted maniac is going to collide with us in a stolen car, never mind break into your home. (The German Shepherd took care of that one night, there was a very hasty retreat) The police won't chase them anymore. There was an indigenous girl who had been before the courts 6 times and the stole a car and hit a tree with six of her friends inside. She died and some were seriously injured. I do not want these people walking free.

Yep, numerous terrible incidents just show that putting punishment before rehabilitation is failing miserably all around the country, and it's going to get worse unless there is a radical change in government and community attitudes. We will end up like in Port Moresby living behind barbed wire with guards and dogs.

You're right. We are repeating the same problem..

Stop isolating Rabid Human knuckle draggers... Start putting them down..

You don't get to "learn useful skills and have a better future" when you've just destroyed someone else's..

Many of those TAFE courses etc were shut down as the individuals in them often just turned into a Feral with a Cert IV/III or Trade.. adding a skill set doesn't often remove an attitude or behaviour. Sure some "come good"..

But those who have destroyed lives do not deserve a chance at a better life... they've ruined at least one other and those who cared for that victim..

Just using the wrong punishment.... 5.56, Lethal Injection, Gallows, The hot seat... all effective at removing those who wish to cause malicious harm to others.

for crimes where there are many eye witnesses not directly involved, like the latest burke street incident, happy to see capital punishment employed

but the evidence would have to be beyond any doubt what so ever with circumstantial evidence not being admissible.

otherwise no way, there are just too many cases of outside influences being brought to bear and innocent lives being taken.

Just seeing the nonsense in Flinders Street today, involving those FERALS & some known "professional" ferals abusing Police made me sick. These ferals deserve NO respect at all,....hitting & abusing Police,....and what would happen if the Police gave them some of the same,....yeah right.

This thread has gone political and should be in Current Affairs, I think. Otherwise, it's really not possible to say any more on it.

My niece was sorting herself a Medicare Card in Centrelink on Wednesday. In the queue in front of her was a bloke who was trying to work out his new Mobile Phone. He had been in Jail for the past 14.5 Years and hadn't seen a smart phone.
Silly Niece asked why he had been in Jail (Spelt that way because it is closest to the original old French word.)
He said that his Sister was being abused by a Paedophile in a foster home, so he removed the mans genitals, stiffed them in his mouth and killed him. This would be described by most as a ghastly crime committed by an Aboriginal on a White man, if the whole history was not known.
His wife was terrified, as he had dug a grave for her in the back yard in case she thought she would give him up, which, eventually she did.
My question is: What might this bloke have done had he thought the punishment for his crime was going to be death? The trail of destruction could have been long and terrible. The Media and the Shock Jocks would have been in a frenzy.
I don't and never will support the Death Penalty as I see it as just another Murder, and a wast. How much would Criminologist know about criminals if all the best subjects were taken out at the earliest convenience?
    Cheers, Billy.
    Keeping it simple is complicated.
