I have come across that, but i am not sure i see the justification, and i have always found the 6db goes further than the 2db.

Further, but a flatter beam which won't go round corners of buildings, or behind hills as well as the lower db one. Lower one has shorter range, but a more "ball" like beam.
    Something between a 3 or a 4.5 is often a good compromise.

I saw a good diagram once, I'll see if I can find the link later.

I have seen the diagram too, but regardless of the environments i have been in i have always found that the bigger antenna goes further, and i pick up more distant chatter.

I have heard and or read challenges to the diagram.

I was once shown (in nsw) that rescue groups in mountainous, tree'd terrain, use low frequency AM with a very long antenna wire. They roll out the wire and hang it across a couple of trees, maybe its 10m long. We played around with it. It's good for canyon country.

Yep, like the old dipoles (I think) that we used to hang in the trees when I wore a baggy green suit.
