    Welfare. Can't Get A Job,..Yeah Right.

There has been some talk in the media recently about the cost of welfare, and that some on Welfare would have to take a pay cut if they got a real job.
Well yesterday, I met a most "inspirational" young lady.
We were in regional Victoria to attend a wedding & were having a cuppa & a scone for morning tea. We were being served by a very nice young lady, I reckon middle to late twenties.
We were talking to her about the cafe & how nice it was, and asked her what hours it opened. She mentioned that she started this day at 8.ooam, & would be finishing at about 4pm. She said that tomorrow (today) they were dong a wedding in the afternoon,...she would be starting at the same time, but finishing after 11pm. A long day We said, she said "yes, but this isn't my only job, I also work at two other restaurants"!
She said she'd worked at the Mines in Qld for a while, had enjoyed that, but now wanted to be close to family, and to help her Mum look after her Dad, who had early dementia. She herself had endured life threatening brain surgery several years ago.
I told her that she was an example to young people. She just said "I just like living in the Country, & I'm trying to save for my own place". She scoffed at the idea that there were no jobs available, saying
anyone can get a job if they really want one.
Just a really lovely young lady, who'd I'd be proud to have as my daughter.

    Nice story Pickles...

It's so easy to get dragged into the doom and gloom the media seem to enjoy spreading. It's easy to get the view it's all hopeless and the younger generation have no chance.

But from stories like this and what I've seen with my own kids (19 and 20) and their friends. For those that get off their backsides and are willing to travel to the work and do what it takes - there is work and those that accept the challenge deserve to thrive.

Good on her, that's great. On a daily basis I see so much of the 'feral' side of our population, that I start to lose faith....but when I hear of or see people like that, it restores the faith.

My experience of both our girls moving to the bush, is that there are many such good kids, who get on with life and do what it takes. Unfortunately we only hear of the no-hopers in the media

Nice story Pickles. Improved my night somewhat.
Bobby D, hard work is a necessary pain but I want to let you know that 30 years ago we were on 17 % + interest on our housing loan.
All the best to your future & I hope rates stay down for you.
    Cheers

We all know hard work is the only way of achieving your goal, it's not a new concept. Youth unemployment is actually very low at the moment, the lowest it's been for a long time, so we are all working hard. What's not new as well is the older generation complain about the younger, there is Ancient Greek texts that have these ramblings, very funny to read actually.

The reason why interest rates are low is because inflation is low and inflation is low because wage growth is slow. Slow wage growth means that the size of your repayments don't shrink much relative to your pay packet over the decades it takes to pay off a home loan. This is in contrast to most of the baby boomers, i mean yes, they had to put up with peak mortgage interest rates of 17 per cent for a while, but inflation was also much higher which meant the real size of their debt and repayments fell over the life of the loan (Not to mention that the initial size of their loans was generally much lower relative to their incomes than it is now).

I don't want to get into an argument about who has it harder, because of course every generation has worked hard over their time, each generation with unique challenges. But statically it is proven it is much harder to afford a house now, and yes the older generation has greatly benefited from the spike in house prices.

I don't own a house or land yet, but I plan on buying some land outside of the ACT and building my own house myself. I'm actually really excited to do so, every tradies dream, right?

    Cheers, Bob.
