    Vic High Country?

    Hi everyone,

I'm planning a trip to the Vic High Country in Dec. and would like to hear some thoughts on the best route to get the most from our 8 days ... would also like any suggestions on good tracks, nice campsites and worthwhile things to see.

The plan is to enter at Mansfield and work our way back to the Tom Groggin campsite which will allow the shortest route back to Sydney. I've consulted the Boiling Billy book "4WD tracks of the High Country" and came up with the following tracks/destinations that sounds interesting:

    Craig's Hut
    Mt. Striling/Straircase
    Bulltown Spur Track
    Billy Goat Bluff
    Powers Gully Track

Any thoughts/suggestions on these and others?

Also, the big question ... would anybody take a softroader i.e: RAV4 into the High Country? Reason I'm asking is after I had a look at the maps there are numerous bypass or alternative tracks to the above mentioned which might be an option for the "softies" in the group ... possible? or not recommended?

    TIA

    Henry.

    Hi Henry

Make sure you take the camera

to get the pics of a RAV4 stuck on "The staircase" 8O

I wouldn't take the softie there as it

is miles and miles and more miles

to go around the bypass tracks and meet up

If you go up the staircase, the softie would need to

do an extra 2 hours drive to meet you at Lake Cobbler

That book is near spot on in trhe roads description.
As for a Rav4 up there... yes you can take it but expect it to not come home as good, it will cop a bashing underneith and its getting overgrown in the HC now so Bush pinstrips are around....

Now also a thing to remember. alot of trees have come down in storms. so you will have to drive over and around them.....

here is an example of a 2wd road we travelled on...

I went through some of those tracks they would be tough on a RV4,
will be going back through the high country around the 16th onwards.

last year came back with a few bush pin stripes and on one track had to winch 5 tree's off the track but it ended in a good camping spot with no one else there.

    Greylandy,

I'm planning to do the Staircase this weekend (Mt Spec track) to walk up Mt Spec. So I could try to take some pics for you. From what I'm told by a workmate who recently travelled down the Staircase on Cup Weekend your vehicle needs decent ground clearance and the rock steps are no where near as long as they used to be. So I don't think the RAV4 will be any good on this track.

As for Billy Goat Bluff track the softroader won't clear the drainage ditches which there are heaps of on this track and on the 4WD tracks in the area. Low range would be a prerequisite.

Better stick to the proper 4WD's.

By the way the route you are suggesting sounds great. I know there is plenty of fantastic scenery along these tracks.

    Greylandy,

Start at Myrtleford, head out passed Lake Buffalo onto Abbeyard Rd, until you find Manna Picnic area on left great camp spot, good water good fishing. Continue on until next track on right Worseldine Tk (nice climb to heli pad) then left at "T" onto Bufullo Divide Tk then becomes Dan Buffalo Tk, then onto Lake Cobbler should be there by lunch but track no place for a Rav 4. The long way around on Cobbler River Rd (2WD) which eventually comes to a left hand turn onto Wild Horse Gap Tk (if you miss turn you end up at Bernies turn back) this is fairly rough country (especially going the other way). It will at an intersection become Burnt Top Tk and PSA onto Pineapple Flat a great camp spot with a descent river crossing if there is a lot of water about but its a hard bottm no worries.

From there you can go to King River Hut if TR if not PSA up the acsent to TR onto Black Landing Tk then onto Craigs Hut then Mt Sterling Tk you can access The Staircase from here, down to Bindaree Hut, The Bluff, Lovicks Hut, King Billy Tk, then down Zeka Spur into the Wanangatta Valley. Before going onto the homestead take the Tk to Riley's Creek & a great camp spot there on the river & a short walk up stream to a great swimming hole, then come back & onto Bryce Homestead then up Cynthia Range Tk onto Talbotville for a grteat campspot, back track to Eaglevale follow Crooked River on Wannangatta Rd eventually coming to ascent of Billy Goat Bluff Tk then onto the Pinnacles Lookout (on a good day you can see Bass Strait) then follow Meroka Rd to Horseyard Flat another excellant campspot onto Licola then onto Butchers Country Tk (campspots at a premium but one right on river crossing on other side quite large either side for twenty cars but a long way on this track etc) this can be a challenging climb up to Howit Rd back up King Billy 2 then down Brocks Rd bringing you out to Sheepyard Flat & into Mansfield then home, an exhausting circut but full of challenges a fun drive

An easy eight day jaunt if you take your time. I've goy some topo's for more info if needed.

    Cheers
    Bryce

    Greylandy,

Sorry about pics from the Staircase this weekend. Due to the wet conditions of today's rain and the rain over this weekend I've decided to postpone until another day.

    Chris
