Incidentally, the village was burned to the ground by the Burmese Army in 1996 during fighting with rebels and the residents forced to flee to refugee camps in Thailand. Friends of ours had their oldest daughter die in their arms while escaping. Dozens of children became orphans and are being cared for by a church.
The survivors began coming back about three years ago. At first the soldiers robbed them and made them act as porters carrying supplies. With the change of government under Aung San Suu Kyi they were allowed to rebuild.
The current government is helping them with power and water and will improve the road next year.
This is the real world outside sleepy Australia. Just saying ...
