When delivering a load of office furniture to an AFP office we had to show all tools. I included my folding pocket knife. The rent a cop was a bit put out but the officer laughed , then took me to see the room of confiscated blades. Then quoted Mr Dundee , that is not a knife , these are knives !
Same happened at Bris airport . They were more concerned about the cordless drill.

That's quite smart. You could you that for self defence as you don't need to "look" down to extract and open it. My multi-tool is a SOG with a blade that you can sort of "flick" open quickly if you practice. one handed opening makes for a VERY useful knife. It's still no good from a self defence aspect as it too slow and unwieldy to extract. It's a brilliant tool though with it's compound leverage on the pliers. They can grip as strong as vice grips.Quote:

If you walk down the street at night with a baseball bat for no good reason it is a weapon to the cops, rightly so I think.
Walk down a street with a baseball bat on your way home from baseball practice it's an item of sporting equipment.
If you carry a legal length knife properly, any time of day or night and you can argue its need, ie; dentures and I need to cut up my apple/fruit.
Well that's in SA anyway.

Could talk for hours on knives. As a bit of a collector, the laws for import are poorly defined and enforced with varying levels of leniency. What's legal to own and import, but illegal to carry is a interesting topic. In many cases, whether a knife was allowed to be imported would depend on the custom officer's mood on the day- the 'flick test' was a common method used to make a knife fail the single handed opening import test... all the while a 12" chefs knife was easily imported and stocked on the shelf at a woolies or coles.
The laws for carrying appear to be enforced more as a matter of passing the attitude and common sense tests. Common sense prevails as always- take one on a plane, or wave it around in a cop shop, and you're going to have a bad day.
I like folders, have upwards of 20, but generally only carry a small 2" folder at work for the purposes of cutting open pallet wrapping, letters, cartons and the like. This is often a CRKT stubby razel. Don't carry of a weekend, at night, or at public events etc (common sense), but usually have one camping, bushwalking or 4 wheeling where there could be a valid reason (cutting open an orange, making a sandwich etc ;) ).

The Ti-Lock is also interesting, with a really cool lock / deployment mech. Not too many of these around.
