Still we have to live with it. I still carry a stock knife in a pouch and have had no complaints.

I carry a pocket Knife, attached to my Key Ring with a double Snap Hook type thingy. It is an absolute must have at work. If I'm picking it up and putting it down all the time, it's odds on it won't be there the day I need it. At just 50mm it surely couldn't be classed as a weapon.

Doesn't have to be. In NSW it is illegal to carry a knife of any kind unless you have a reason for doing so.

What is an acceptable reason will depend in the first place on how the policeman is feeling and ultimately on the magistrate if it gets that far. But I have difficulty seeing how almost anyone is without an adequate reason - have you tried to open packaging on just about anything you buy these days? Yesterday in town I bought a packet of dental floss for immediate use. Firmly ensconced in tough plastic, fortunately I had a knife (multitool) in the car.

When I was doing my chef apprenticeship, one of the guys in my tafe class forgot to put the padlock on his chef toolbox on his way to tafe. Police pulled over as he was about to walk onto Tafe premesis and gave him a ticket for having an unsecured knife. The knives were in his closed toolbox wrapped in tea towels, so not visible, he had his toolbox in one hand and his chef uniform in the other. We all told him to take it to court as he had "reasonable excuse" to be carrying knives, but he opted to pay the fine as it was "too much effort"

I've had police stare at the multi-tool on my belt a few times.... They must figure it's less paperwork and effort to look away and pretend they didn't see it. It lives there, I couldn't imagine not having it. I must use it a dozen times a day. Infact, it's getting to the point where anyone that wants a knife/tool/screwdriver/pliers at works come and asks if they can borrow it.

If the police ever ask me why it's there ... I can supply them with an endless number of uses for it. Self defense is NOT one of them. Imagine you have someone ( ok, ok, it's always at least 2/3 poeple ) front you. In your dreams your going to have time to retrieve a multi-tool from your belt, then unfold the blade. As an offensive weapon... Yeah it's great. Not half a good as a streak knife available from anywhere for next to nothing though.

In recent times I've started carrying a single AA battery LED torch clipped to the side of the multi-tools pouch. It's worth it's weight in gold. It's used multiple times a day.

I think the idea of these laws is to give police an excuse to search/take knifes from youth gangs. I'm sure if you look at statistics ... the majority of stabbings will be domestics with domestic household knives. Anyone with intent isn't going to use a small folding blade.

I carry knives a lot of the times in my car, ( in the boot) and in my boat. along with fishing tackle. I'd like to see them try and prosecute some one going fishing. How else are you going to cut bait, clean fish etc. Next step Nanny state will probably say " take all fish home for the wives to clean"

I've never had a problem with Police as far as carrying a knife goes, and I have carried either a pocket knife or a multi-tool (Leatherman or Kershaw) on me for many years. I'm not even sure if it's illegal to carry them over here - it's just not an issue - something you never hear about.

Where I HAVE had a problem carrying these tools is in the workplace - usually on minesites owned / operated by the "larger" mining companies. Many of these companies employ a "safety bureaucracy" who have nothing better to do than sit in an office dreaming up bull**** workplace "safety" rules and regulations, for no other apparent purpose than to justify their own existence.

I have had many a run-in with these clowns over the fact that I have been carrying, and using a multi-tool in the workplace. I've been told many times to "lose" the multi-tool, but somehow it has always managed to remain on my belt.

Fortunately, there are still many smaller mining companies and contractors which have not been over run by these "safety" fanatics, and where common sense still prevails (at least to some extent). Over recent years, I have managed to stick with these companies and avoid the BHP's and their like.

Because my knife is always on my key ring, I completely forget it's there until I need it. As a consequence I've had two confiscated at Air Port security check points. No further ramifications mind you.
