FIFO - 2 on 2 off? Advice?

Our son did 2/2 for three years and has only recently switched to a location in Brisbane.
Pros include being home continuously for 2 weeks with the family and it also makes short holidays good. For example they flew to Japan to ski for a week. With careful management he was able to live off work for two weeks and save some money, although he spent some of that online shopping for bits for his Hilux.
Cons are being away for two weeks and spending every evening making Skype calls home. Also hard on the wife in a home emergency while away.
