    A Stroke waiting to happen

    Gday All,

Got the results back from my latest Cholesterol test and the doc tells me its not if , its now when I will have a stroke if we cant get it under control.

I have a family history of Cholesterol and I seem to have the double whammy of my liver rejects all the medication that has so far been tried. Been on and off statins and non statins for 20 yrs and each time my liver function goes haywire, but its onto another type to see if they work.

Tried just about every diet you can imagine and the only time I have had a single figure cholesterol reading is when I was on high dosages of fish oil. Funny - spent 30 yrs at sea catching them and still had to take fish oil tablets - took that many think I started to grow gills... anyway even that seems to have lost its effect and my last test has me back in double digits again.

Anyone else suffer from such high cholesterol and wasn't able to take statin medication ?

Anyway life continue's and hopefully the new brand of drugs has some effect , plus trying some new stuff in the diet so see how things look in a month when the next visit to Dracula tells how this set of changes goes.

    Cheers Ean

Geez, that's no good Ean, sorry I can't offer any advice as I have the opposite problem. Hope you find something that works for you.

Oh, and I'll be in Darwin for a couple of weeks in July - hope you can still have a beer with me.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.

    What a Bugger!
Sorry, I can't give advice as that is not a problem I have.
    Does exercise help?
I hope you find something soon.

    Thanks Guys,

It's not a new problem , had it for 20 yrs that I know of but when your 30 it doesn't worry you or the doctors that much , but hit 50 and something seems to change . If I could take the medication it would be under control long ago , but kidney issues is a bigger problem than cholesterol in my mind so it's just something that is there .

My biggest saving grace im told is I don't smoke so that's atleast something I dont have to give up. I'm not a fast food person and my diet is good but can be better so change a few things there and soldier on. Exercise certainly helps but I'm active in that and have just taken up the push bike again so all good. At just under 6,1" and 89 kg I'm not over weight by any great amount .

I got to many things to see and do yet so not planning on bowing out early.

And a beer in July sounds good.

    Cheers Ean

Sorry to hear that you're going through all that Ean.

I went through a stage where gps used unfortunate and scary expressions such as you were given, "stroke territory" and "it'll soon be a nursing home for you mate" come to mind.

I also found out (at my cost) that statins were not the cure-all beloved by the gp prescribers whose enthusiasm for them makes me wonder about whether they get a good commission. I have found that I cannot take them due to side-effects.

You can see how cynical I have got.

I now seem to have found a sensible specialist who detests the misuse of such scare terms as above. He has me on a modern blood thinner that does not have the problems that rat poison (warfarin) has and he is satisfied that the above risks are minimised as much as possible for my age.

I do hope there is modern sensible info that can be sensitively delivered for you.

And I also hope that those professionals who choose to use throwaway scare statements would do some further professional development

Thanks for the reply , I am very familiar with statins, read heaps, tried several and I can understand your point on side-effects as the last one's I was on I stopped taking before I had the blood test for kidney function, and I had a headache for 2 weeks after I stopped taking them. Our eldest daughter is a kidney dialysis instructor / nurse and she has also done research on statins so I have a fair bit of info from both sides of the leadure.

I will see what the next test say's and go from there but a ultra sound of my arteries is most likely next.

Having had both parent suffer strokes I know it isn't nice Andrew. That's why I pound the pavement each lunchtime for 45 mins - even if it is 32 degrees and 72 % humidity like it was Friday.
