SA to change historic registration laws

Originally they had it right, most states have copied our basic set up, but then this current mob have run the state into the ground so they're finding new and interesting ways to make more revenue!

We are the historic vehicle state,but it's because no one can afford to update!!

A change of direction with laws a few years ago meant if you had a lhd vehicle on historic rego and it was for example yellow when made, it must be yellow to get historic rego, weren't allowing any safety upgrades ( eg brakes) if they weren't an option from factory, basically it meant that a crap load of lhd cars that were here were sold to interstate people who could easily rego them. If it came with cast iron heads but has alli ones - no rego until those cast heads were back on, fitted a different radiator to get better cooling? No rego.., some clubs apparently had their vehicle inspectors refuse to sign off on vehicles because of stereos and speakers as they weren't original equipment so they called car as non historic!! ( I think they sorted that but I'm not certain!)


Most historic vehicle regos are used for 10 or less trips a year according to surveyed clubs ( can't get it without being in a club ) the average cost was abt $330 for 3 years. As this rises I can't see it becoming affordable, and once again our state government will squeeze the life out of something for a very small overall gain, which they will lose as more people decide not to rego at all.

Add that to the rapidly aging population that owns these vehicles and you decide how hard it will be to attract new owners...


Yes come to SA, we have no electricity, (the worlds most expensive power when it does come). We have an emergency services levy on everything half of which goes to general revenue!

My local hospital operating theatre can't be used as new regs state it must have stand alone aircon system, and cannot have wooden doors facing the theatre... Cost of repairs is $179,000... This is a government hospital... And the government is now in its 7th month of refusing to pay anything towards it!! In they last 16 months we've have 12 fatal car accidents, we have had over 60 serious injuries from car / boat / plane and farm injuries.. We are over 1 hr from the nearest operating theatre hospital so qualify for everything under this governments own policy but they won't pay up...

Then about 2 weeks ago they announced they're giving a $250,000 handout to a small boutique brewery in the Adelaide Hills area so they can start a bigger bottling run without having to sell shares etc in their company!!!

Sorry this is a bit of a rant but they are trying to lessen the damage they've done here to the historic vehicle laws but in doing so they're also having another money grab..... I'm a little jaded as to their reasoning for change...

From memory when I last looked at SA Historic rego, nothing much has changed Dig, it's way out dated to the rest of the other states even the other states old system is far and way better, I have a friend in Adelaide that has the same bike as me, he won't doing Historic rego as they deem his bike as not original and he has chambers in stead of the standard exhaust and non standard brakes, which means it's not eligible for historic rego.

Aftermarket(NON STANDARD) parts are allowed in NSW, as long as they are similar to parts of the day, improvements like brakes are allowed also for saftey reasons, as long as they don't take from the original look of the bike, with a car as they are not visable it's fine as it doesn't take away from the original look of the car, at some point common sense must prevail, especially for saftey reasons.

I think I remember QLD might be going to the new log book system as well.

I think the other states need to look at the NSW and VIC systems and how well they seem to be working, it has become very popular to put your old vehical on Club plates and I think it's giving so much extra revenue to the roads authorities in these states, that the new Log Book system will give them even more.

Yes, the new Vic system is working well and the crackdown recently to weed out those abusing the system is having some effect. In Vic you can put anything on club reg as long as it passes a roadworthy (and any engineering that may be required to do this if it's highly modified). If it's too highly modified, then it gets a different disignation, but if it's more than 25 years old, then it's fine.

45 and 90 day permits - just have to fill the log book out before leaving the driveway and you're sweet. You have to be a member of an approved VicRoads club and be seen to be active - meetings, etc. You can buy a 45 day permit and if you run out, you can simply go and buy another 45 day permit withi the same year. :)

45 day permit is around $70.

It's around $50;) in NSW for 60 days, but the bonus is if you ride to a club event, you don't need to fill out the log book, you just need to carry the info on the club event, this may change in the future of coarse if people abuse the system, but so far it's working well.

...careful if you take a bex digger.....that's historic.

A couple of people have suggested that I could have my 1980 Honda CB250RS on historic plates.

However, I couldn't do that with a clear conscience as I ride it more than 60 times a year.

Someone told me that the number 60 corresponds to once every weekend plus every public holiday. I haven't done the maths to check the accuracy of that claim, but it must be pretty close. :)

Yes you can get Vic club rego on a vehicle that is newer than 25 years old - But it must be a replica of a vehicle over 25 years old.
Even if your vehicle is on full rego it still requires a roadworthy, and a club inspector look over the vehicle prior to getting club plates.

Not anymore you can't, the VJMC put in a complaint about this, they are in the process of changing this as people were abusing the system(ie) putting retro versions of classic bikes on VIC Club plates(eg) 2015 Triumph Thruxton, which is clearly NOT A REPLICA.

This is why in NSW to get club plates the vehicle MUST BE 30yrs old, which is the way it should be.
