A) you're talking in a straight line, with ABS systems you can "steer" the car whilst braking under extreme conditions.

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ the driver should be paying attention to the road and surrounding details, instead atm the main detail people are paying attention to is their speedometer to make sure they aren't going over 40kmh, and hence are in fact paying less attention to the road and it's surrounds

I must admit though I have not seen statistics on school zones having any effect (positive or negative) except increasing the areas where police can fine you for speeding. Plenty of studies and write-ups on how speed & red-light cameras often increase the accidents on roads though :-)

The argument against 40kph zones on a major highway, by the person on the committee was that a sudden and drastic change in speed limits [80 or 100 down to 40] was that one inadvertant action my a semitrailer driver could wipe out a large number of people. Given that inadvertant inattention to speed limits does occur, then these zones pose a major risk of a catastrophic accident occuring on high speed limit roads. His argument was that there should be service roads, or on site parking where schools were located on major highways to avoid such a risk.

My argument didn't have to do with where, or how speed limits were imposed, but was a reflection on the mentality of pedestrians where areas are percieved as being "pedestrian safe". In these cases the Mechanism of Injury (a term used to described the type and kind of force applied to a victim) is reduced by reducing the speed limit - no doubt. But the risk of an incident occuring in the first place is increased because the mindset created reduces pedestrian diligence.

To illustrate, when you next drive down a narrow street, notice that you are looking well ahead, you can see what's turning into the street further up, you notice any kids momentarily running out of driveways and back, you know where all the parked cars are. Then when you drive down a narrow street with a series of speed humps, notice how your attention is drawn to the foreground to overcome each obstacle. You are less likely to be as aware as before (this will vary depending on the kind of person/driver you are). As your gaze looks down to overcome the obstacle at hand, you might miss the glimpse of a child playing near a driveway, or a wheel chair moving slowly behind a parked car. Your risk of an accident increases, but the Mechanism of Injury decreases, because you are going slower.

In a 40 zone, cars bunch up, moving your gaze to the foreground, and to your speedo. Awareness of what is on the footpath decreases, so risk increases, but the force with which your car will impact, decreases.

I went for a drive up to gympie on saturday and half the cars on the road were police...

they were pulling people over left right and centre for speeding and other stupid behaviour, like it was the national sport.

i made it up to Gladstonbury for a look without being pulled over and after giving the campground the once over i started the return journey.

just south of gympie one fool went past me doing 140kph + i estimate... and over the rise coming the other way was one of those new red monaro highway patrol cars... it slammed the brakes on, does a handbrakey in front of me and my disco doing 105kph, and nearly wore me. Bloody lucky i had just had the brakes done https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

it took off after the clown and pulls him over about 4 or 5 mile up the road. As i drove past the officer gives me a wave and gestures he is sorry for the ruckus he greated back up the road...

those monaro's certainly have some tow i have to say.... and the guy doing the speeding will be licenceless i imagine.

They can get you in any direction front or rear, as long as the path to the car from the radar is a straight line. If it is a curve, say for example across the apex of a corner it will say you are going faster than you are because the distance is less than it actually is. Matt
