The problem is that spell check wouldn't pick that up, so they wouldn't have noticed anyway. Something to be said for good proof reading.

It's a very common mistake. I see it a lot on various fora I visit, especially from Americans. Naturally, I comment on it - especially (again!) when its use completely changes the meaning of the sentence.
