Koolan Island 1930's - 1960's...
I had to use Google Maps to find out where the island is located. More recent pics there. Not much greenery left now by the looks of it (Google satellite view).

Looks like they are digging it out of existence
Just had a thought...(thats where the steam was coming from).. my Mum went over there in the early 70's, 1972 i think, playing darts. State comp i think. She could really throw the arrows well. Somewhere i have some slides from when she was there. I seem to remember something about the most scenic rubbish dump in the world. A big schute that went over the cliff and dumped straight into the ocean. That was the norm back then. Surely its not like that now.
Cheers Rod
Not quite, but after over a 100 years of mining there is about 5 years left and then rehabilitation... the inlet you can see is the main pit and now has a seawall rebuilt and will continued to be mined, with an eventual depth of 180m below sea level.
Interesting history here with some evidence William Dampier used the iron for ballast in the late 1700's when he circumnavigated New Holland, it is one of the richest iron grades in the world.
That sounds like Headstone on Norfolk Island. It was certainly like that in the early Nineties when I lived there. It may well still be:
