Check out these metal monsters from a bygone era. Took me a minute to work out where the operator was - quite unique when you see it. Not sure if it would pass modern OHS. 😉

Hulett unloaders. Used in Cleveland to unload the iron ore from Lakers which brought it from up near Duluth and the Mesabi Ranges. The operators sat in a cab in the unloader arm above the clamshell bucket. The ore went from Cleveland docks to Cleveland steel works and other steel cities like Steubenville and Pittsburgh. No steel industry in Steubenville or Pittsburgh nowadays. I am not sure if Gary and Cleveland still have steel works. Downtown Cleveland was a disaster area. The whites fled to the new outer suburbs although Downtown is becoming gentrified. Gary is run down and like Cleveland the whites have gone elsewhere. Steubenville is an unemployment disaster. The city had no industry other than steel and the businesses that fed of it. Pittsburgh was the world centre of steel making and with the total demise of the steel industry there has re-invented itself as a centre for health care, universities, and corporate headquarters. But what happened to 150,000 steel workers?
Toll will be $2.30 for cars they say, bugger all in the whole scheme of things
