Would the back open, with the tyre being there? One would hope so, otherwise how would one reach the Maxtrax?

No they're not. They're coming out the way you told your phone which way is up. You're phone (and sometimes your digital camera) knows that only one way is up. So, if you take a pic where up is up, it comes out fine. But if you rotate your phone, the phone assumes that you know what you are doing and keeps the same direction as up. Accordingly, the pic looks sideways or upside down to you. Up is one of the EXIF settings.
