There's a place in the uk called Mary by the brook and another called snowdonia. Australia seems tame in comparison lol

If you study a UK Ordnance Survey Map you will find where a lot of the "Australian" names originated.


Keeping a little bit of Home, with the Settlers in the early days, & some of those names are good for a chuckle being thought up in Medieval times.

The list goes on and on. Just look around Sydney! There's pretty much only 4 ways to name a town in Australia. After some guy, after another place that already exists that's nothing like it, exactly what it is or an aboriginal name

How do you think "Swatting Flies by the Creek Lane" got it's name? It was probably as simple as that too.[bigrolf]


In true Aussie fashion it would get abbreviated in time to "Swatting Flies Lane". Or even shorter.

When we lived on Norfolk Island, I was amused by the name of one of the roads -Dead Rat Lane. Another one is Poverty Row.
