If it was only a broken axle, I think they would have simply removed the rear axles & tail shaft, locked the centre diff & drove on front axle.
Surely it must have been more serious than just a broken axle to warrant going to that extent.

Best guess - failed wheel bearing, broken studs, or broken stub axle and no spares.

Truth be known it simply happened because some thieving scrotes nicked their wheels while parked overnight in a resort Car park so needs must. Easy to tell, because said scrotes would have left some house bricks or Besser Blocks behind. Easy peasy.:Rolling::Rolling:
