I suspect that many of the "best firewood ever" are simply the best available in the area. (With "area" being the economic supply zone for a particular market.)
We had a chimney sweep out, a couple of years after our metal fireplace installation. At the end of his clean, he enquired as to what fuel we used. When I told him Black Wattle and Grey Gum, he replied, "Well, you won't need my services for another 20 years". They burn pretty clean, apparently.
