Wondering if someone would be able to assist me with some welding

For MiG welding, the MiG Welding Calculator app by Tecnorobot is very helpful too. The free version covers only mild steel welding - if you want stainless and nickel chrome options, the "Pro" version of the app (without ads) will only cost you $3. ;)

Forgot to mention you will have to planish the welds afterwards to stretch the metal back out. The welding will cause a bit of shrinkage of the metal.
A flat faced hammer and a flat bit of thick steel or square tubing to back it would work.

I would use 8mm gas less wire with 9mm tip.

I wouldn't use gassless, full stop.:(

my experiance with gasless was it was hopeless on thin metal.... and messy on thicker metal. i've found gas to be better in everyway. Then again, I'm not a good welder :angel:

THe only way I can do thin metal, is 0.6mm wire, lots of gas, lowest power setting... very, very low wire feed speed... and "tacks". You want fun, try welding Citroen 2cv's .... a coke can is robust in comparison :o

I use gasless outside and it works fine with tweaking the settings.

Because I only occasionally MIG weld, I only use gas less now. Apart from a bit of powder I've found it good on anything I've done which is body panels up to about 5 mm. I'm only using an old SIP 170 amp compact welder. And yes the right settings are essential.

And remember that the polarity is reversed between gas and gasless.

Another option if you only want to plug the holes. Get some butyl mastic and squirt out a small amount. Let it go off until it becomes firm enough to handle. It never fully dries so even the next day will still be fine. Role up little balls and then plug the holes with just enough from each side to fill the holes neatly. Sort of like making a grommet out of it. It will stick like the proverbial to a blanket and can be painted. You get the holes filled without the distortion you will probably get from welding and it is a lot easier if it is only filling holes that otherwise don't matter too much as it seems in this case.
