    who's in Africa?

I'm thinking of a self-drive South Africa, Botswana, Namibia trip - are there any locals on this forum who can offer advise?

    Thanks, Michael

This could be useful, as well. It's on our bucket list.

I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

As a matter of fact, there are children all over that would appreciate a small effort.

Michael, we did 9 weeks self drive in southern Africa (SA, Botswana, Namibia) in mid 2015. Wife and I and another couple (2 vehicles total). We were joined by our daughter and another young friend/landy-tragic at different times. The only one of us that had been to Africa prior was our young friend.

We hired kitted out Puma's from Joberg and headed straight into Botswana. 3 weeks there ending up in Kasane (and a day tour across to Victoria Falls) before heading across the border into Namibia.
Another 3 weeks working our way down through Namibia into South Africa. A few days in Capetown then across the garden route and south coast before heading up through the Drakensberg to Kruger. Returned the vehicles to Joberg and flew home.
    A summary:
    - About 15K km's
    - one puncture (luckily happened just as we pulled up for lunch so no tyre damage)
    - one dead puma engine in Botswana resulting in a 300km tow from the other vehicle. Hire company replaced the vehicle.
    - repaid the landy/karma gods for the rescue by towing a dead 300tdi defender from Fish River Canyon in Namibia, down and across the border to Springbok in SA - about 300ks
    - none of us was hijacked, mugged, raped or murdered, and we only had one "encounter" with the South African police
    - Like everywhere - if at all possible avoid primary tourist spots during peak times (eg Kruger during SA school holidays)
    - I went expecting to see wildlife, but my primary purpose was to experience the country/bush. The country/bush is awesome, but I was absolutely blown away by the wildlife.

I could rattle on for ages, but my advice - DEFINITELY DO IT!!

When are you looking at going?

Camping in Botswana is very limited, expensive and the best campsites are booked up to 12 months in advance. Botswana campsites aren't fenced, so you are very much in the wild. Its an awesome experience.

Worked around Africa for over 10 years, flew over a lot and drove around some and had my share of the good, bad and ugly. The good has stayed with me as it is an awesome place.
My advice is go, you will not regret it.

Sorry Guys, just saw all your posts, the notifications didn't come through.

I'm thinking about 28 days. I was going to do Namibia & Botswana, but from landing in Johannesburg to arriving in Windhoek is 14 hours. I can drive the 900km in that time! Do that twice and lose 2 days of holiday, plus add the cost of 5 connecting airfares, and it's going to be cheaper to hire a Defender in Johannesburg.

I'm looking at a TD5 110 with two rooftop tents and camping gear. Will also consider an off road trailer with another fridge and roof top tent, as there are five of us.

I've done probably 60,000+km of outback touring in my 110 here, so I know we can do it. I've used ground tents, so we'll see how 5 people in 2 rooftop tents go.

I'm thinking Sept - Oct, as it goes over school holidays here. It seems to be a good time of year for wildlife sightings, and it's not European school holidays (peak season).
