I thought most of that type of vehicle had them in the back.

Certainly rare in Australia, but probably less so overall. Comparable perhaps to the civilian 6x6 110, for example.

I don't think many survive overseas as well. Lots of Series 3 versions about.
I think the S2a versions look much nicer.
