Wet Arses Again
Well, last night's storm here was a lot worse than the one a week or so ago. Another 48mm fell in a very short time and made a real mess of the place. This morning, I found that I had mud right through my shed & workshop - the first time that this has happened in over 20 years of living here. What was even more surprising was that there is a decent drain in front of the slab that my shed lives on - I had taken off the covers and cleaned this drain right out only a couple of days ago. It is now full of mud / silt.
Poor old Paddy usually sits high & dry on his perch outside the town hall - but he got a bit of an unscheduled wash last night.

At least our house stayed dry - well except for a couple of small leaks into the kitchen and I know where the water is getting in to cause them. Might have to bring forward that plan to replace the sheeting on a section of the roof.
Around at the young bloke's place, it was a lot worse than the previous episode. The entire street was flooded, with the water level coming to within a couple of inches of flowing in under his front door. His house is timber frame & floor on stumps, so is quite elevated above ground level. Most of the other houses in his street are more modern places built on concrete slabs - most of these were flooded. Wasn't helped by the number of total ******* who had nothing better to do than rubber necking and driving up & down the street, some at quite a rate of knots - pushing waves of water into the already flooded properties. One of these tossers (I know who he is and I also know his boss very well - stupid dickhead was driving a clearly marked company ute) - is in for a very rude shock when I front up at his place of work on Monday. He is likely either to cop a loss of employment, or a smack in the mouth - he can take his pick.;)
So - the photo on the left below shows the young bloke's back yard last time it flooded (was still daylight). Last night, it got considerably higher than this - and the back fence ended up letting go as shown in the photo on the right.

The place two doors up from his lost their complete back fence - big job to put that one back. I managed to get this one back to a "lockable" state this afternoon, even if it doesn't look pretty. When the young bloke gets home on Thursday, we'll have to pull the whole thing down and re-build it.
Both his roller doors were punched out of their tracks by the water flow - I've managed to fix the main front (electric) one, but haven't even tried to fix the other one yet. Really need to get inside the shed and attack it from behind - but there is no other door into the shed. :o Might have to take a panel off the wall - but I can't remember what is behind each wall - so that job might have to wait until Thursday when the young bloke gets home.
Anyway - there's enough work around there to keep me busy tomorrow just cleaning up the mess. Eventually, I'll get to finish off that room around this place that the shelving unit fell out of the wall in. Have fixed all the holes in the wall and re-plastered it, and got the painting finished yesterday - only have to put the shelving unit back up - properly attached to wall studs this time - when I get the time to do it. :D

Well this is now the second biggest Wet since Darwin started recording (in 1941 I believe). Over 2 metres at the Darwin airport although 2.9 metres is the record. We've had 130 in the last week to take us over 2.2 metres.
Officially the Wet is from 1 October until 30 April so we still have 6 weeks to go.
Yes - they're saying this is the worst that many can remember in Kalgoorlie too. Certainly the depth of water flowing down some of the streets and the level of damage caused has not been seen before.
It was worse at the young bloke's place than I previously reported. Inside that second shed that I did not try to force my way into was his motorbike and a pretty rare imported Mazda RX7. The water did not get deep enough in the shed to damage the bike - but the Mazda is now a write-off. It is currently sitting at a panel beaters shop where repairs have been quoted and the insurance assessors have looked at it - and they officially wrote it off last week. Shaun is waiting for them to give him a "buy back" price as he reckons that he can part it out and sell it for a lot more than the write-off value.
We did manage to re-build his back fence - it is a lot stronger now than it was, and has some mesh panels installed low down to allow water to flow through (as does the back wall of the shed now too). Murphy's law though - now that we have made some mods to allow for these flood events, we probably won't see another like it for at least as long as he owns the house.
Apparently a couple of the insurance companies who have had claims against them for damages along that street are preparing a court case against the local council, claiming that the flooding was significantly contributed to by poor drainage design, and by recent council works in the area which has increased the risk of properties flooding. I have been asked to provide the photographs and dash-cam video footage of the flooding that I have. Only too pleased to assist - it is about time that this useless council was held to account for its incompetence. :censored:
