    Extended Trays Dual or Tandem

    Hello All,

Every now and then I have seen different makes of trayback utes that have had tandem rear wheels. Apart from having the load spread over two rear axles what advantage do tandem have over a single dual wheeled axle?

Not six wheel drive. The vehicles I have seen have just been two-wheel drive otherwise stock vehicles that have not even with a lifted suspension

    Kind Regards
    Lionel

Most car based or sized vehicles have insufficient space for dual tyres, Lionel.

People add an extra axle so they can carry more weight. i.e. raise the GVM.

As Mick says, its about raising the load capacity.

I interpreted Lionel's query as six wheels on two axles v six wheels on three axles. Look at those ridiculous Yank dually utes.

Same thing. They do that to increase the load carrying capacity, don't they?

    Hello All,

Thank you for the reply - best look away if you are expecting a Land Rover...

Accessed February 13, 2017 from HQ 2 TON UTE, V8 T BAR AUTO HJ HX STATESMAN CAPRICE FRONT AND INTERIOR

One like this Holden rated as a 2 ton instead of a 1 tonner. There was a Japanese tray back ute version driving around Bundaberg not long ago.

Front axle and two axles at the rear. Only one of the rear axles drive. Six tyres on the road

Could they have achieved the same increase in capacity by just having a single axle at the back but with dual wheels? As in two wheels at the front and a single axle at the back with 4 wheels. There is a Toyota Land Cruiser example designed to registered for the road Accessed February 13, 2017 from,Utilities and Off-Road Vehicles

Okay found a Land Rover version Accessed February 13, 2017 from Weird dual wheel Land Rover - Page 2

What are the engineering advantages of either going dual or tandem?

    Kind Regards
    Lionel

Adding an axle is easy, it's virtually tacking on a trailer axle. Generally the wheels are matched to the existing four, so able to utilise the car's spare.
To fit dual wheels would usually necessitate a complete diff change, hub to hub. The dual wheels need a drastically different offset to singles, requiring two different types of spare to be carried.
The overall width of a dual wheeled axle would be wider than a standard utility or tray.
One of the advantages of an extra axle is better weight distribution but at the risk of total loss of traction on uneven surfaces such as, crossing a gutter to enter a driveway.
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.
