its because REAL off roaders drive 90's and 110's, 130s are for tradesmen who like to pretend.![]()

Have been reading a Defender brochure, and was wondering why Land Rover give the following "star" ratings for the different models:
Towing: 90:** 110:***** 130:***
Carrying Equip: 90:** 110:*** 130:**
Extreme Off-road: 90:***** 110:**** 130:**
I can see that the 130 will tow a bit less than a 110 because it might already have the ute tray full of gear, but not sure why it only gets 2 stars for Extreme Off-road. The ramp over angle will be less, and perhaps the rear overhang is a bit more, but 2 stars indicates it's a bit of a dud.
Is it because the 130 doesn't get the Electronic Traction Control?
Does anyone have any "extreme off-road" experience of the 130 vs 110 along the same tracks on the same day etc. Do the 130s fall far behind the level of capability of the 110s?

The mystery is why they give only 2 stars to the 130 for carrying equipment??
I'd say you've got it right .. ramp over angle, departure angle and maybe the kerb weight of the 130 counts against it .. also .. Land Rover rates their traction control very highly.
I haven't been on the same track with a 130 but I know of one who couldn't even drive through a small dam!!!![]()
Ooooooooooohhhhhh nasty Henry, i like it![]()

Because of the short wheel base the 90 will be best off road, then the 110 and last the 130, the only limiting factor with the 130 is the ramp over angle.
On road the 90 loses out because short wheel base is bad on road, well not bad but its worse than a longer wheelbased car because the wheels are closer together.
A 110 is a good compromise, it has plenty of room for all the gear you need, will handle well on road and is pretty damn capable off road. If the majority of your driving will be on road go the 130 or the 110, if you are after a really capable off road weekend to the the 90 is the go, this isnt to say that a 90 wouldnt be a good daily driver, the 110 or 130 is just better.

Kerb weight of the 110 is 2055Kg, and the 130 is 2117Kg, but you'd get a lot more into the 130 it will eventually be significantly heavier.
Also - I know the turning circle of a 130 is atrocious!
I thought the lack of traction control might be a good thing. I have read a few posts where it goes mad in deep sand and impedes progress instead of assisting.
WEEELLLLL..........the 90 has enough trouble on tight corners......
need i say more....?
I cant speak from experience, but i havent heard of the fender doing that but i do know the magazines have commented on the new rangie doing exactly that. When trying to accellerate in deep sand, when in alot of cases wheel spin is ok as it is often needed to keep the car moving, the ETC cuts in and tries to stop the wheels from spinning, a problem when all four wheels are spinning.
