Absolutely agree with you there. On a trainer you don't get any rest or even micro pauses for the time your on it if your doing it properly. I'd just rather be outside in the environment even in bad weather than sitting inside looking at a wall. Pocket Rocket is doing a short session every day to build fitness so she can start riding to work and will use the trainer on other days. I used mine quite a bit last year when I was struggling with an injury.
They have benefits. I'm just not a fan.

I ended up buying the Cycleops Fluid trainer from Wiggle.com.au.
It was within my Budget ,I figured I'm not going to ride on the trainer that often as I will be riding on road most often, only at Nights when I come back from work late and/or during foul weather.my Bike is a Giant Mountain Bike.Just love getting out and cycling specially long Hill climbs. [tonguewink]
No worries. Just rode a little (90km) with some pros and long term riders. My non riding pedigree showed up big time. I feet cool at about 30kph avg but many had a 40kph+ avg[wink11] 1/2 iron man Geelong. My first long ride & swim.
Happily I was able to take some speedsters down in the run later[biggrin].
Enjoy riding as it is much lower impact than running which is usually my bad habit or mid life crisis.
That's very keen , Longest Ive ridden on my Mountain bike was about 35 kms , I dont have a roadie to ride. but i feel exausted after riding that sort of distance. im about to have spinal surgery in 2 x weeks. So Ill be out of action for a while. Surgeon say he wont operate unless im below a certain bmi which is understandable.
3tkm on a MTB is a very different thing to that on a roadie. Hey have you been to H2O in Westleigh? A great MTB park just around the corner from me when I'm in Sydney.
Its sick I agree.I might double it in a full iron man pre back surgery which would be needed after that [tonguewink].I love my mtb as it sits up a lot more but the rode bike at speed is rather cool till I meet all the bike riding types who kick my wimpy legs and butt.
Bike riding is great to get the BMI down. Running is better for dropping weight but much higher impact. Get to the pool for ultra low impact stuff till your riding again, Good luck with the surgery. When injured with a broken bone in my foot two years ago I got a float belt and run in the pool. Looked stupid as but it was great exercise.
Info if you want to try it during your recover IF your surgeon say you can!!

It is your mountain not mine by the way. I know some people who are sooooo much faster than me or go sooooooooooooo much further than I do. My PBs are mine. Yours at 35km is very cool. I like punching my boundaries but love seeing my crew do little bits. Got them in 5km walk/runs while I do longer ones. It is very cool to usually get to do it with them as well after my events. They would be impressed by your 35km effort as should everyone. Its your PB Bravo Zulu
I havent been there Simon , Sounds like a blast. I will check it out on the google map tomorrow and head down there this weekend.Ive been Trying to get back in shape again . i cant run because of my spinal problem but finding bike riding and swimming is really helping me with stabilising my spine and getting ready for the operation. I've been riding to Hornsby pool and having a swim and riding back home to pennant hills.
Ah of course, your back! Maybe offroad isn't such a good idea at the moment. Thats a fairly good return ride though and you've got some hills depending on which way you go. Best wishes with the operation.
