Thanks MacMan. We are safely home in Melbourne.

Now trying to work out the best way to sort the damage out. Insurance first, or Coopers first... I'm betting Insurance...

    Will,
That is some serious delamination of the tyre. Normally only see that sort of thing on semi's or raod trains running retreads and overweight. Out of interest how long have you had the tyres? I was initially put off buying Cooper AT tyres (ST I think) because they had a known problem with delaminating tyres. Gave them a miss for a while then put STT's on as I believe that they did not suffer from the same problem. I would be getting hold of Cooper Tyres asap. I am wondering if they sent out a hot batch. I am led to believe that when tyres are manufactured they should be left for 12-18months before being sold to cure properly.

The tyre that let go initally was just under 2 years old. The spare was about 4 years old.

Glad to hear all are all right.

Nothing more frightening than a tyre delaminating.

Can't imagine what it's like having two in one day.

    Cheers

    Will,
It would be about 4 years ago that I looked at getting Cooper AT's (ST I believe), just before I sold the Disco. My local Tyrepower dealer warned me off them until he could be sure the delaminating problem that was occuring had been rectified. He informed me that he knew of at least 10 tyres in Australia that had delaminated in a frightening way. The period is about right. Obviously he would not make the same comment in court as he is the agent for Coopers here. I am glad he used his good judgement at the time to sway me off them. He believes the later batches and improvements have solved the problem. Keep this in the back of your mind when talking to the Coopers rep. May be worth a search on the net for any info or stories done on the faults.

I have Cooper ST on my P38A. Is there a date or batch number on the failed tyres?

From memory i think it was a bout 2000-2001. I am not sure when it was finally sorted to the satisfaction of the dealers, but I am led to believe that the last couple of years there has not been the same issue. It will be determined by when you tyres were made, not when they were fitted. I have STT's on mine and they have been fine. I believe the problem was limited to the ST, not sure of how many batches. Looking at Wills delamination I would say he has got a case for replacement at the very least. All this was happening not long after Firestone had their problems as well. From what I have read when tyres are made if they are not allowed to cure and bond long enough it is possible for the outer tread to delaminate form the inner casing. They are not anywhere near the only tyre to do it, it was just that Cooper had a significant batch do it. Firestone had a huge batch. I have seen Dunlops, Bridgestones, Khumos and BFG's all do it at one time or another, for what reason who knows. Retreads do it frequently because they do not have the stringent curing times that most large tyre manufacturers do. I would not under any circumstances use retreads on my car, I only ever use them for trailer tyres and then a set I gave my Father in law that were on a Nissan I bought, delaminated badly on his trailer and completely destroyed the wheel arch. Thank God i had the foresight to change them in the first couple of weeks of owning the vehicle. They did look in really good nic with heaps of tread.
Anyone that is concerned should talk to the rep that sold them the tyres to allay any fears. i believe this is part of the reason Copper went to an all new ST (AT type) tyre this year.
Bridgestone had problems in the 90's with some of the SF Eager tyres bubbling in the side wall. I had one do it on my Torana a week after putting them on. The dealer tried to tell me it was my fault and I had run the pressures to low. I threw it straight back at him as it was his shop that put them on and set the pressures only 5 days previous. I went straight to Bridgestones state manager who immediately authorised a replacement tyre, so I can not complain about that. A few weeks later my cousin had the sam happen to his car but with serious consequences, it blew a rear tyre at speed causing him to swerve into the bush, hit a mound and flip the car several times. Fortuanately he only recieved a severe crushed hand and bumps and bruises. His showroom condition XA Falcon coupe was a write off though. In the space of a year I knew of at least 15 people that had issues similar with Eagers. I have had the same with 1 Dunlop tyre and that was also replaced with out any drama.
