It all depends on what way you want to go and if roads are open. Melb-Broome across the desert you would be looking at 5-6 days solid driving about 12 hrs a day without sightseeing (desert travel can be a lot slower). Melb-Perth-Broome - all sealed roads about 5-6 days as well. Melb-Kalgoorlie-Broome about 5 days. This is all solid driving. If I was going to Broome from Melbourne I would at least want 6 weeks to do it comfortablly and I would do the desert crossing and maybe the Canning Stock route at the same time.

    Wardy,
You could do it in 3 if all you wanted to do is spend a week up there fishing. If this is all you want to do I would fly. 6 weeks is ideal and gives you time to see most things. We spent 3 months travelling up the west coast some time ago and still missed a lot. I have known people to drive non stop Sydney to the West Coast (Exmouth) in about 48 hrs. Bugger that though.

Pack your 4by up and truck it over via TNT , fly ovver to Broome collect 4by .....fish .....drive home 10 days

    airfares $500
Transport $1500 ...you would spend that nearly in fuel thru the desert over 5 days

there in 5 hours and fishing , and a relaxed travel home ....

down to Laverton onto Ayres rock - down to S.A and onwards home

I think it might be a plan to get up there about 2008... we will drive coz we really want to see whats in between here and there. The freight and fly option is a goodie tho. Once again, thanks guys

Anyone considering freighting a car look at Adelaide Car Express. We freighted my Rangie to Adelaide for my Dad for $340 The rest quoted $800-$1200 to get it over when I originally bought it. The downside with freighting a car as i have thought about it a few times is that you can not leave anything in it, including camping gear, fridges, luggage etc and all I have spoken to say no exceptions. Ends up defeating the purpose.
