Great in a straight line - not so good going around corners.
There are many great engines for many different reasons. The article is one point of view, and is written by an american point of view, and ones that they thought were worthy of the list for one reason or another.
The debate on here has been interesting to read, and what others think are worthy to be on the "best engine" list.

Judging the Cossie is more difficult, as they were virtually the ONLY engine for some time.

Actually Honda have been one flop after another in F1.The only decent engine they made was the V6, but with both Prost and Senna steering them you could argue that it wasn't all down to the engine.The V10 blew up more times than not, the current engine is nothing short of a laughing stock, how Honda can put so much time,money and effort into producing an engine so little performance is amazing. RR Merlin for best engine ever,followed by the mighty Tdi [bigwhistle]. Pat

And look where F1 is now,the cars are glorified Prius's that are painfull to watch and the tracks with all the tarmac run off's so the poor little diddums can drive back on without messing up their hair. Pat

Totally agree re the type of F1 car, would much prefer the sound of the old ones.....but disagree re runoffs ....don't want to see F1 drivers killing themselves.

If we are talking best engine again my vote goes to the Merlin.Any engine that can survive RR's type test 20% above it's rating without issue is heroic. Pat

F1 is a safe sport in nobodies book ever, no motor racing is. Anybody who has been involved in motorsports will agree with that. Saying it is safe is really just a reflection of detachment and desensitisation, but as soon as you see something hit, are in a vehicle that hits it is gut wrenching. As a kid, "he'll be right" is what I first thought when Senna hit tamburello corner and probably what lots thought when Jules Bianchi hit the tractor, but sadly it wasn't the case and neither of them survived. I recall years ago when I was karting (racing, not hire) , a race held around the Wollongong Light house. I still recall coming down, looking at the track and saying to my Mum that there was no way in hell that I'd race there, and that race one of the girls in my racing class clipped a barrier and was killed. When officiating and you watch failed open wheeler plow full stick into barriers and a peleton of sports sedan turn into a shrapnel grenade on the start line and much much more you tend to get the impression that open wheelers at well over 300kmh are really not all that safe despite the vehicles and procedures being as safe as they can be in the context of being as fast as they can be. F1 being a safe sport - not ever.

F1 is safe,three deaths in how many years?,and Bianchi's was all his own fault.The cars/tracks everything F1 are sanitised to the point it's silly.I read a post on another forum that stated that if a 2005 car raced in the 2015 Malaysian race,the 2005 would have lapped the field 7 times,thats pathetic. Anybody that vaguely understands racing knows that it isn't safe. Its safe in front of a tv.

In 2005 the Malaysian GP was won by Fernando Alonso, 56laps in 1:31:33. 2015 was won by Sebastian Vettel 56 laps in 1:41:05. Over the years the race times don't vary a lot because as technology makes the cars faster the FIA slows them down again.

I haven't just raced in front of a TV [bigwhistle],F1 is pathetic,look at Melbourne,they looked slow,they were slow and only 4 over takes all race,no wonder the fans are leaving in droves.
