Prado vs Disco 3 I need your help !

    Guys I ned your help!

At work we have a GX Prado which is due for replacement, Im trying to convince my collecgues we would be better off with a Disco 3.

The vehicle is used as a rapid response unit and carries :

4 x large kit bags - for 4 large - ish blokes carrying all our individual kit - weight - about 30 to 40kg each.

4 x large - ish blokes that go with the kit bags.

2 x sets of Breathing apparatus, and accompanying splash suits and boots,

1 x large gray space case full of Personal protective equipment and exhibit seizue kit - weight - about 50kg

2 x small grey space case with various other items - total weight about 20kg

Now this is the go, the boys want to put in a report to get back to the GXL model so we can get cruise control and a little more comfort - we respond to the whole state so sometimes we can be travelling for a number of hours at and up to what would be called speed dangerous.

my argument is the Disco 3 would cover the basic comfort needs

these are the stats as 4x4 australia shows them :

    Prado (GXL):
    Price : $56410
    Engine : V6 A5
    Torque : 376 @ 3800
    Power (KV) : 179 @ 4800
    Weight : 2110
    Load : 740kg
    Fuel : 180ltr

    Disco 3 (S TDV6)
    Price : $59900
    Engine : V6 A6
    Torque : 445 @ 1900
    Power (KV) : 140 @ 4000
    Weight : 2418
    Load: 812kg
    Fuel : 82

Ok so there they are on paper, at furst glance the prdo is cheaper - and this is full retail not govt discount, is more powerful weighs less, and has a greater fuel capacity - read range. On the downside the prado is a toyotasan uses more of its load carring fuel has less torque -

So its over to you blokes - what aces can i pull out of my sleeve to get Land Rover over the line ?

Im going to track down their corporate rep tomorrow and see if we can get one on loan.

    any thoughts ?

    Mick

As it is now January 2006 and no longer December 2005 - the on road price for your disco has just gone back up to $72K - I believe the discounts were only for December.

Federal Govt price for your disco is about $53K on the road but the Prado is somewhere around $45

Other wise go the Disco - can get you to more remote emergencies.

Hi landrovermick, why not just start with the safety angle. The D3 not only out handles the prado off road, it’s miles ahead of the prado for both handling and comfort of ride on road and remember the D3 has a longer wheel base than ANY toyota, not just the little prado

Next and you will have to double check this but I believe the D3 has more room in the back for carrying gear ( you can thank the yanks for that ) and the D3 has far more room inside.

Again, from a safety point, the D3 has far FAR better visibility particularly over the bonnet. Because of the better designed shape of D3s and Range rovers, you can see the road much closer to the front of the LRs as compered to any land cruiser.

The best way to convince them is to take them on a test drive of a D3.

Let us know how you get on, cheers

Now if you were comparing the diesel versions I would go with the D3 everytime but after driving both the V6 versions I would go with the Prado unfortunately.

I was away at Robe during the past week the the Discovery club and we had one ring-in who had a V6 Prado. I have to admit it was very nice to drive, had heaps of power (better acceleration than a V8 Disco) and on the highway it was only using 11.6l/100km.

For starters the cavernous interior should be the only selling point you need, you have more chance of getting all that stuff into a D3 comfortably than you do a Prado.

Or you could just show them every copy of any australian magazine which has run a test on them. Or the fact that it won all three 4wdoty tests for each magazine.

Or you could hold them at gun point and tell them the D3 is just better.

Hmmm... if I know government and fleet procurement procedures, one being $200 cheaper would be enough to sway them one way or the other.

It may also depend on what type of "incentives" (aka gold days etc) LR can offer
