4x4 Australia Car of the Year

    Howdy All

Just finished reading 4x4 Australia, while laying on the beach catching some rays...

I am going to have a bit of a punt and say that the RRS TDV6 will get 4x4 Australia's Car of the Year Award.

Apparently it is being announced in next month's issue, but they gave a snippet indicating the field had been cut down to six vehicles:

    - RRS TDV6
    - Pathfinder V6 Petrol
    - Pathfinder TD4
    - Jeep Grand Cherokee TDV6
    - D3 V6 Petrol
    - Mercedes ML320 CDI

Knock out the petrol engined vehicles and that leaves you:
    - RRS TDV6
    - Mercedes CDI
    - Grand Cherokee
    - Pathfinder TD4

In the same issue they gave the nod to the RRS over the Mercedes CDI.
You could not see the Pathfinder TD4 beating any of the field for innovation or offroad performance, which leaves the RRS against the Cherokee.

Cherokee gets the nod for its Merc diesel and value for money. With locking diffs it also goes well offroad. Overlander did a test on both a couple of months back and just gave the nod to the RRS, but whinced at the price.

My tip; RRS just pipping the Cherokee....

    Thoughts???

    Gotta run....surfs UP!

Yeah, my thoughts are that you're a lucky bugger. Being on holidays for a year.

Seriously though, I haven't read a 4x4 Australia for a while, but I noticed that 4WD monthly recently did an article on the Sport.
Be interesting to see the reactions to an award field with no Toyota

Pedro -- it does not qualify as it was released last year. It is only for vehicles released in 2005.

Anyway....it is a V8 and runs on that crap called petrol!

I think the RRS will get the nod.

The step-father-in-law has a new Laredo diesel. IT's a pretty nice car, but I don't think it's as well finished as the RRS.

4X4 has a category called 'Bushability' which they invented to try and get the Cruiser/Patrol over the line and I think the Jeep will fail here. It's got a smaller fuel tank than the RRS (77litres) and I think it's on a monoc... a monok.....a monacqu..... I don't think it's chassis is as good.

They'll do their best to get the datsun over the line, but I think it's a wannabe rather than a serious contender.

The prob with the Merc is that I understand that the traction control can't be turned off. One had to be dragged of a beach here recently, 'cause the brakes would come on every time a wheel spun. So when they tried to snatch it, the car kept on applying it's brakes! :?

Apparently the fuel tank is too small to be car of the year

The Toymota and Missin owners on other fora are already complaining about the short list and the fact that there are two Land Rovers included.....

Sorry to burst the bubble but I think it will be the Pathfinder.

D3 won it last year and as the RRS is basically the same car with a different body (well that how they will see things) they will not consider it an improvement. The cost probabaly will not go against it as most consider it value for money.

While not as capable as the D3/RRs the pathfinder is a major improvement over its predecessor with a number of innovations introduced. It is clearly the best all road vehicle in its price class and provides a lot of vehicle for the money - its looks (looks like a D3) might go against it.

Oh - and remeber the D3 won last year months before its release so if 4x4 have access to a vehicle that has not yet been released it could be a consideration - I cannot think of anything though.
