Andy lived in Alice Springs and in a small community like that he will be sorely missed as well as by the rest of Australians with an adventurous spirit.

    RIP Bloke

I never met him but a heap of my riding mates knew him both as a rider and as someone in the motorcycling industry. Not one of them had ANYTHING other than good things to say about Andy. He will be sorely missed by a great many people, and like Quiggers, I just can't watch the Dakar any more this year...

    RIP Andy Caldecott.

I hadnt watched the coverage or seen any news or anything until i read the paper on thursday, and was shocked to read that. Watching the last three days of coverage just wasnt the same. A sad event for Australian motorsport. Matt

RIP Andy Caldecott, passed away in the Lisbon-Dakar. One of Australias greatest enduro riders. He will be missed.
Then another two kids hit by support vehicles and killed.

Well, I did watch the last few days thru Mali and on to Senegal, where more troubles eventuated.

It's not the death of Andy, nor the watchers, nor Meoni last year, but what I'm finding is the 'great adventure' is not so much anymore. Which makes the 'death' issue a little bit more difficult.

When Thierry Sabine (RIP) ran the event it was a grand excursion, with a route that was reminisciently reflectory of the great camel caravans, crossing the Sahara and passing thru legendary, ancient, mythical cities, like Timbuktu.

Wars have impeded the route in recent times, but to me, the event, while still extraordinary, needs to get back to its roots. viva la difference, M.Sabine.

    opinions, guys?

    cheers, GQ

I agree some of the atmosphere has gone out of the event i think.

Whilst it was an australian who died this year, at least there was only one killed, there were 4 last year if i recall. Matt
