    Defender Extreme, how good are they!

    After months of pain, I finally got my hands on a 2001 Defender Extreme. Standard with long range tanks, dual batteries, spotties, aftermarket Landrover seats with 85,000km on the clock.

    First impressions after a 1200km weekend towing a car trailer with 1 tonne of wood on the back;

    What a car. Drove better under tow (smoother ride and quiter motor), used 11L/100km over all, more comfort than I imagined and the Td5 is amazing. I had to stop on a steep uphill gravel slope with the trailer hooked. Was able to take off using low and diff locks. Impressive.

    No tacho- what were they thinking. Noise - Thats why the previos owner spent so much on the stereo! Back door - rattles on tracks and feels weak, need to get a wheel carrier.

    Overall, I'm in love with the girl already, and the missus is just as rapped. What more could you want?

    We'll, a snorkel, roof rack....

    Brett.

    Good choice of rig mate, i was after an extreme when i bought the disco but they were still a few k out of my price range, a bit like the TD5 discos. They are amazing off road, many extremes have been and come regularly to my BBQ's and they make tracks look ezy. Matt

    On our last Club run to City View 4x4 park there was a Guy their who had a 90 Extreme and he kept getting stuck - but that was due to driver ability and tyres I think.

    Had to be the case, not that I'm biased.

    Well done. Get yourself an AULRO sticker to finish it off.

    I do recommend you do something about the spare wheel on the back door though. It's a pity yours is "only" a TD5 because if you had a 300Tdi you could have:

    A bonnet mount. They effect your handling, visibility for rock hopping, fuel economy and some say put too much stress on the front springs with a bullbar but they are way way attractive.

    At least I understand that you can't put a bonnet mount on a TD5 - if I'm wrong then you're away.

    It is probably just me but I don't like swing away wheel carriers - they make too much sense and are not cool enough.
