Yulin dog meat festival begins despite rumours of ban - BBC News
Still happening in China and other places, as it has for a very long time. Of course, it goes both ways: there are people who say we shouldn't eat kangaroo.

Like in abbatoirs?
I actually agree with all that. I was merely pointing out that our sensibilities are, well, pointless. Having eaten a number of things in SE Asia, I have probably eaten dog. Having eaten pies here in Oz, I've probably eaten many things.
I once told my daughter, who absolutely refused to eat my very famous steak and kidney pie because of the offal, what she was eating in a big mac. Amazing. I probably made quite a dent in their profits. 100% Angus is an interesting concept, in my view. Particularly the 100% bit.
That said, I won't knowingly eat dog. Or cat. Simply because of the ingrained taboo, and these critters have been mates ( YES, cat. There are a number of breeds that don't hunt. I have a cat, and I also feed native lowries and King Parrots here on my deck. Cat ignores them ), and it's hard to eat your mates. Can't stand horses, so maybe I'll eat them.
Kangaroo? I won't eat it caught wild. Far too many worms, in my experience. But roo makes far more sense in this country than sheep or cattle.

This reminds me of when my younger son spent a semester as an exchange student in Korea. On his return, his mother asked if he had tried eating dog - his response? "No way I could afford to eat in that flash a restaurant!" (My wife would probably have been concerned if he had, as she used to breed German Shepherds, and we always had at least one dog.)

Johntins, Its getting hard to buy certain things from the butchers... Makes it like christmas when you do your own killing...
There are worms in roos everywhere and the human consumption ones are no different... The idea is to know what to look for and then you can rest at ease... Last time we went out, 2 clean and last one was riddled but we only wanted 2 to 3 so had the minimum anyway...
One thing I love is when people use seafood highlighter and call it crab meat.. No fish in it, made from tripe.. Mind you tastes great..
JDNSW, I ate takeaway from a local restaurant, when I was young... They got busted for selling dog meat in a certain dish...
When they reopened I returned and found out that the dish I liked was dog, and of course a year later it was again, but only for a couple of customers and all on the quiet...
The guy that owned the restaurant, told me exactly what he did and the way he done things... Pretty much the same way we look after our stock and how we make beef, lamb or goat, taste nice and when the best time to do a killer...
I know there are people here that have done there own kills, and they know when I say "you dont stress stock out before slaughter", it destroys the meat... Kindness and respect, if you cant do that then stick with coles...
As a follow up to this I am reminded of something an old friend told me. He had come to Australia as a teenager about sixty years ago, and was working on a place somewhere near Young. Part of his job was killing and butchering sheep for the house. One winter afternoon, cold and drizzling, almost sleet, he was sent to get a killer. Faced with all the killers sheltering in some scrub at the far side of a 1000acre paddock, he was contemplating saddling a horse to go and get one, when the pet lamb (no longer a lamb) butted him from behind...........
He says the family never associated the disappearance of the pet lamb with the exceptionally good mutton that week!

Some Chinese thoughts on the subject.

I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food
A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking
I was never in a position to do that, not being a farm boy, but a mate I'd like to see again did the killing at Mitchell, Qld, around 35 years ago. The meat was great, but of course it needed hanging. This is one of the things wrong with meat these days. No hanging, especially no dry hanging. I have found two butchers worth the trip for me. But I'm hanged if I can find one that has suet, a vital ingredient in a good, old fashioned pastry.
Yeah. Used to get roos for the dogs. It was strange the disparity between the animals. I've never understood that.
Don't forget the red dye stuff. And people think cooked crabs are that colour! Can't agree about the taste, but that's me. If it looks artificial then I don't like it.
