    Parts Pricing - 2.7 TDV6 Oil Pump

My RRS 2.7 TDV6 was recently due for its belts change and as it is in the range for oil pump housing failure so looking at that to be changed as well. As I intended to do the job myself I acquired all the parts before hand but ended getting a local independent to do the work.

I needed to get a new oil pump and investigating the price through LR parts suppliers including dealers some who are on this forum the price ranged from about $380 to $450. However if you go to a Ford dealer the price is just on $170 - $200-$300 cheaper.

No problem if the part is actually and aftermarket part or different but not so - the LR part is actually the FordMoCo part and the LR part has the FordmoCo logo cast into the housing.

Now I can under stand the dealers ripping us off but what about the independents? Are they getting their goods from LR at trade and passing the item on retail or are they actually getting them at trade from Ford and selling them on at the LR trade price and making big dollars on the sale - now I dont know hence the thread.

If I was an independent I would be sourcing the pumps at trade price from Ford and selling them about the Ford retail price - I would probably keep a couple of the LR ones in stock at the LR price for those who would not accept anything but LR in their vehicles.

So exact same part from Ford at $170 vs around $400 or more from LR - where would you buy.

There is a post from 2 years ago where the ford part was priced at $116 which is a bargain compared to what LR want for the same part.

    Gday Garry,

Yep , the brake light switch is the same, the L/R option was more than double the local ford dealer price which was under $20 , same part, same number , and they had heaps in stock, so I didn't get the old , "we will have to airbag 1 in for you at your cost" answer. I purchased my oil pump housing from Ford as they also had that in stock here in Darwin, and was about the same price as you have quoted.

I am all for supporting locals , but if that means the local Ford dealer then so be it.

    Cheers Ean

In defence of the independents it would be a very tiresome job to go and investigate every part that might interchange with a Ford and then price it. The smart ones might view this thread and take note for the future but if I were running a business I'd probably have better things to do.
If I was looking for a particular part I would have a lot more invested in getting the best deal and would investigate the Ford pricing.

This doesn't cut it when its the same engine, we aren't talking about random parts here. Its well known that the TDV6 in LR vehicles is also in at least 4 other brands of vehicle - Jag, Ford, Citroen and Puegot.

Does anyone know if the LR pump comes in a LR box or a Ford Box - the Ford one comes in a Ford box but all the loose bits come in LR bags - inside the Ford box.

The issue I raised in this thread also applies in the UK where the Citroen price is similar to our Ford price - no matter what make of car the pump ends up in, they are all made by Ford.
