Britain to ban diesel and petrol vehicles

Britain is moving to ban diesel and petrol vehicles by 2040 to reduce air pollution which kills up to 40,000 people thousand every year. France has a similar plan.
This is the reason vehicles already have EGRs and DPFs.
How many Aussies also die every year from vehicle pollution?

It is interesting that I was discussing with a Chem Eng friend the other day that he had done analysis that based on projected changes in crude availability, Diesel will become largely unavailable in 20 years. Same for bitumens. This would have major impacts for transport and even how our roads are built..

I guess the choices will be gas or electric.

I would think that more Aussies would die of starvation than pollution if they banned diesel or petrol
In Europe driving a hundred miles is a huge distance But here in Aus that would be the average commute for many.
Until there is a Viable alternative to fossil fuels then the Ships, Trucks and trains that cover vast distances that are needed to supply ALL of our needs will continue to use them.

That'll prove to be a momentous task. They'll want to make sure all they're infrastructure is up to par. I'm guessing though, that for a lot of small sized European countries, electric car and push bikes would work. Places like the USA and Australia, Russia etc would struggle with distances though.

I think things like getting cars out of the cities would be a good start,, and would help with ideas on what exactly is needed and how's it could be done on a larger scale.

In a few years bunker oil is being banned from use in ships (due to emissions). This will mean a huge increase in demand for diesel to replace it or at least shandy it up to meet the new emissions requirements. This will have a large impact on diesel availibility for other uses, and hence drive up prices..

I would hazard to guess that a huge percentage of vehicle pollution is created in the urban areas and that is the obvious place to make a start.

We should be replacing the cotton fields in NW NSW with corn to make biofuel for our Landrovers.
We could use recycles plastic to build the roads. Harvest the raw materials from the plastic islands gathering in the oceans.
And go back to the days of the tall ships.

You forgot the important bit - without it, the message is totally skewed.

Too true Ron,, just a sensational media headline, yet again.

Trout, whilst I agree with what you say, I look and talk of places like the City of Melb, I've been to Perth although 30 odd years ago, and its similar in design I guess. I'm thinking that essentially a small, or smaller areas like these could be trialed so to speak. I don't know, I just think it could be a good place to start.
