An old fisherman once told me that if the shark attack victim was of Chinese or Asian descent then that dramatically increases the chances of the shark re-attacking in that area in a short period of time because you know how when you have a feed of Chinese you're hungry again 1/2 hour later ?.

But in all seriousness, we've played merry hell with the food chain. Back in the 80's and early 90's we had football fields of striped tuna that used to come through just off of the headland here at about this time every year but those schools are no more (I presume that they've been systematically wiped out by netting somewhere on their migratory path). Then we put the great white on the protected species list. In effect we've wiped out part the food chain but assisted the apex predators to multiply and this is only one example.

I say again, read up on how men have utterly destroyed Yosemitie NP, all in the name of science and management. Ecosystems are complex, far more complex than we can ever hope to understand, and still we meddle. Your example only reinforces that, as the ocean is exponentially more complex than a simple national park. And yet we believe we can control climate, which is way more complex still. Our arrogance is astounding.

Yellowstone was another example. The natural systems were going to hell in a handbasket. They eventually returned the apex predators (wolves), and the recovery, whilst not complete, is amazing nonetheless.
