Pajero
oh how annoying the minister for war and fiance can be.
so after working out that we would get her a jimny she now doesent want one cause she doesent want to listen to her mum and sister winge about it being too small every time she see's them, so she is going to keep our td5 disco.
so that now means i need new car.
and holy crap batman what has gone on with the used 4x4 market nothing has changed price wise since when we brought the disco 4 years ago
d2a disco are still like 10k for a resonable one 105 series cruisers are 15-20 and holy crap pootrols with the 4.2 are stupidly priced, so i went well what are the new vehicles worth and well it looks like 30k plusfor anything newer then 2011
soi really dont know what to do
i need something softly sprung that is reasonably high up has good suspension travel and has cruise control and doesent cost the earth to run or service
which pretty much brings me back to d2a disco's is their anything else anyone would reconmend
the only other vechile i am thinking of is a jeep grand Cherokee overland with its air suspension
fj cruiser and pardo's are all too dear or on the very edge of the budget
the workmate 4 door wagons are the same but i would be more likely to go with one of these then a fj/pardo
the 4 door wranglers make the disco feel like a limo as they are very cramped
defender wouldn't be bad but i don't think my back would like it
so any thoughts?
i would also rather not have full independent but well not much around with out it these days

Budget?
I've been toying with the idea of moving the D2a on but I can't see good buying in a lot of what is on the market. Good D2s are just such good value....
If you are not towing, Pajero is a good option, I ran an NS diesel for 200k/6yr. Manual box and you can avoid the known probs with DPF , few mods make them v capable and the right suspension can be v comfy ride.
Jeep wrangler unlimited, reasonably cheap, pre 2012 the older engine is a bit lacking in power but certainly seems reliable, SWMBO's has only needed a rear wheel bearing in addition to servicing in 210,000KM although from research it seems that even hers is still worth $15K+
A very capable vehicle if they appeal.

Tote
Edit, just read your initial post properly so a wrangler might not be suitable.

I'm with Nick. D3. It's where I'll be going, unless I hang on a bit longer and go D4. If you really insist on live axle then a D2A. Still some good ones around.

yeah i am not the biggest fan of the d3-4 not when the gbox oil is around $50 a litre and they become much harder to do all the maintenance on your self at home
budget depends on older stuff pre 2011 id like to keep under 15 for something after 2011 30k is about max
and yeah the wrangler i find just have no leg room and i am not tall and the misses complained about the back seat of brother inlaws having no room ether, i dont know if the older 4L 2 door versions have the same dash etc
ill have to find a pajero and take t for a drive and see how i like it
