I am with DiscoMick et. al. I picked up my D2a Td5 SE with ACE, good tyres, excellent maintenance history, including preventative maintenance with 145k km out of Sydney for $10k. That was in May.
Set up an alert on Carsales and wait... took a few months but they will come up.
Mine popped up on a Sunday afternoon, spoke to the owner Sunday afternoon and the service guys on Monday morning.... bought it before 10am.used 4x4
Mind you I wouldn't read my first post though.....used 4x4
Running awesome now with some more preventative maintenance on the way.

ok well i found jk jeep (different one to brother in laws) and it was no where near as bad as their's so only thing i can put it down to is they have made the seats so they cant go back fully.

so atm i have narrowed it down to
    Discovery 2 td5
jeep jk diesel - not sure on these think i would be better off with d2 td5 over them
Jeep jk rubicon - those lockers
toyota fj cruiser/pardo - more leaning to fj atm similar size to d2 with rear locker but independent front :/

i am yet to find a discovery 3-4 to check out but while a great vehicle but not convinced on reliability but if i did i think it would be the v6 petrol to remove a lot of the issue's.

i am also kinda thinking maybe a jimny cause damn they are fun to drive (took one for a test drive and was all smile's)

i looked at pajero's i am not thrilled with them and missues hated it.

patrol is still off the list as they ride far too rough from the couple i have been in.

landrcruiser 76 would be nice but i dont think ill get one in price range.

so for something newier then 2011 badget is 35k max pre 2011 budget is sub 20k but more like 15k

so is their anything i have missed and is their any dual cabs worth looking at?

35 is a decent amount of cash. 4.2td patrol. I know you said ride comfort isnt great but nothing some decent suspension cant sort out. Td42 is one of the greatest diesel engines of all time..its also one of the toughest drivetrains you can get.

35 is for 2011 or newier

and yes 4.2 pootrol would be the one i would get if i got one but they are old so you are going to have issues with body electrics and just generaly wear and tear hence why pre 2011 i dont want to spend more then 15 20k for something that fits perfectly.
for a 4.2 patrol td your paying stupid money for them, at that id just get a d2a td5 and upgrade it with lockers wheels and lift

Having gone from a d3 to a 130DC Dual cabs have a trade off in both interior and load space in comparison to a wagon ( unless you have a canopy which takes away some of the point of a ute). The latest generation of dual cabs are pretty good but I don't think they'll fit in your budget.
The JK rubicon gets a different transfer case as well as the lockers

I am in a somewhat similar situation as your good self Lyonsy and ended up with Jeep Wranglers at the top of my list so I've spent considerable time researching them.

From what I have seen there is no way I would touch any diesel Jeep which was outside of the original Jeep factory warranty and even then I have my doubts. Used JK Rubicons are hard to find, may have a history of 'hard' use and do command top dollar. Which leaves the JK Sport variants. There are differences mechanically over the model years with some which should perhaps be discounted from the purchase options list.

The FJ Cruiser - used examples seem to be way over priced from my perspective.

    Good luck in your search.

seen a 76 cruiser today had a sit in it etc and its off the list be a good unit with a few mods like adjustable seats but even then the floor is lumpy and uncomfortable misses esp dident like the floor, it was also smaller inside then a D2.

    so down to a
    D2a
jeep - getting cold feet on they seem to make the D2a reliable lol
    fj cruiser

misses is willing to look at 2nd pajero but i think thats ruled out still

so its looking like between a D2a and fj cruiser

will hopefully sit and drive a fj this weekend

as for fj being over priced considering you can get them from 25k with under 150'000km on them compared to pardo's of same era being around 35k for simerlar km's for a base with out their tc system doesent seem a bad buy even with toyota tax on it
