    Out of work again

    Well,
Here we go again. FQML are shutting down the Ravensthorpe Nickel Mine, so redundant again (no redundancy though as been there less than 12 months).
The search begins again, starting to be a little more than over it though.
Just got everything back up to a decent operational status after being run down and neglected for some time.

yeah, me too. Been out of work for two months and everything I look at seems to go to someone on a 457 visa who is not even in the country yet, and they are prepared to work for a fraction of the rate! They clearly dont have Aussie mortgages and credit cards to payoff. In some areas of the NSW gov (transport for example) almost 80% are 457's, same as many back-end departments at the big banks, Qantas etc.. Well that is before everything is outsourced and off-shored to the subcontinent...

No redundancy for me either as I have been forced to contract for the last 5+ years as no one seems to want to employ anyone over 50 full time.

In many respects corporate greed is killing the place (CBA???), what hope is there for this country? What ever happened to jobs for Australians? I know the 457 rules have changed but there are still 10's of thousands of them here for the next two years at least.

Rant over, normal service may resume..... :-)
    Cheers

    Yeah,
Our current government keep saying there is a skills shortage so 457s necessary, what complete and utter rubbish. I agree I turn 50 in a couple of months. So many people highly skilled and out of work yet we can still bring in workers from OS.
    Cheers

Some times I think those of us with stable &/or long term employment forget how lucky we are.
I must remember this when working is ****ing me off.

I wish you both the best of luck in your job searches.

Craig, travelrover, I understand where you are coming from. I'm in the same boat, however, I am working. I had to accept a job where 457s wouldn't go.
I hope you find work soon, Craig.

    No different down here...

They have backpackers working on farms and in the packing sheds, yet there are dozens of young to mid age people trying to get work around here and there are a lot of farmers will only employ back packers and the packing sheds prefer back packers...

Some thing to do with being able to get away with paying less and kicking them out if they dont work hard...

My son is going back out into the wheatbelt for work, places he knows that employ people that work and live here in wa...

I keep hearing about a lack of employees but all I have seen is the number of un-employed... I know with my skills I would be employed but thats only because the industry I grew up in is always looking for skilled labour irrelevant of age...

Those with engineering skills, boilermakers, carpenters and the like are easily replaced with low skill foreigners and the company thinks they are better off...

I hope you all do find work soon, I wont be taking jobs from others so there is a position left in the work force...

Thanks all for the good wishes...

well statistically I am not unemployed, I am not on any list, government or otherwise.

I just dont have a job.

And I know of many people in the same boat. All with 30 + years experience in our various fields. And many of us lost most if not all of our Super or other investments in the GFC (when my problems started) so have nothing to retire on and are trying to rebuild our finances, pay mortgages and credit cards to get in a position where we can retire and not expect any handout, cos it wont be coming...despite having been a tax payer for more than 40 years.

You cant do that without a job, and what savings you have are now rapidly being eaten up just keeping your head above water until the next gig. At least I have time to work on my project 300 Tdi Defender, just cant buy any parts.

    Cheers - Simon

Every industy seems to be in the same boat.

I work in IT ... There has been 0% wage growth in the last 10years that I can see. The company I work for was given government grants to open an R&D office in the technology center in ballarat. The idea being they would create jobs and hire from the University of Ballarat. Most of the new people hired are fresh imports from india ( on 457 visas no doubt. I obviously haven't asked ). They have absolutely decimated the IT sector as they must be willing to work for minimum wage. I don't think we have hired a single local graduate.

A local uni student will have spent about 15 year in education, owing close to $40,000 in HECs ... That is if you didnt' take any supplementary loans to make it through the degree. They obviously will refuse to work for minimum wage they can barely survive on, let alone pay there large HECs debts back with. "Locals just don't want to work" .. Yeah right.

I know someone that used to work at the IBM technology center in Ballarat. He said they are now importing there indian IBM staff on 457 visas down there.

Everywhere you go these days ... Just look around at the indian serving you. The local take away, the petrol stations. These poor bastards will be all being ripped off and being paid far less than the minimum wage (otherwise the employers would hire locals rather going through all the headache of importing people). I don't understand how they are affording to live in Australia ( massive share houses maybe ? ).

    seeya,
