It will be hot John but the upside is, his family will probably be the only tourists in town.
Hi folks. My son, a former member here, is looking for advice on where to go around Christmas time. As a serving member of the ADF his times are variable. He was thinking of the Birdsville, but he's never been there. He has a maybe 09 HiLux double cab tray and a Mars camper, but he is a capable 4WDriver, and has come out on a few AULRO trips. The car is well set up in a general sense.
He is currently based in Wodonga. Q: Is the Birdsville super hot at that time? Is it out of control with tourists? Where else would you suggest at that time of year? He has a six and three year old ( my grandkids ).
Chris is a good citizen in the 4WD world. In fact, he is possibly better than most of us, given his history. He will do the right thing. Any ideas for a trip welcome. I would assume minimum 2 weeks.

If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.
As Ian says. It will be very hot, and is outside the tourist season. There is also a possibility of a good wet season extending far enough south to cause problems, although that is very unlikely that early and that far south.

Maybe a Cape York trip would suit?
I have never been any further north than Coen myself But I have watched a couple of video's of people driving the telegraph track and it looks like a lot of fun and the kids would love all the water crossings and beaches.
Birdsville would be killer hot and dusty mid December.

As said very hot.
The Simpson would also be closed.
I'll probably be touring either the vic High Country or the S.A. Beaches.
Robe and the beaches or Stockton beach in Port Stephens area, trouble is Christmas is the busiest peak time where ever you do finding solitude is going to be hard, and if inclined to camp in caravan parts probably all booked out by now.
Definitely not Cape York - that will be wet season there by Christmas, and you really don't want to be there then.
At Christmas, anywhere in the tropics is probably wet season, with only major highways likely to be open, and they're not guaranteed. Anywhere inland south of that is going to be hot and most likely dusty. Best weather is going to be anywhere along the coast outside the tropics, or anywhere in the mountains, or Tasmania - but of course, these will all be relatively speaking, overrun by tourists at that time, so take your pick. Inland NSW, Victoria, southern SA and SW WA won't be too bad for either weather or tourists.

What about the South Coast and nearby High Country of NSW, from Batemans Bay to the Victorian Border, magnificent beaches and the numerous mountain trails close by, Bendethra and many other Camping and driving adventures,
Area is always busy at Christmas but not unduly so, seems to be Victoria's Gold Coast, at least around Eden and Merimbula.
Bermagui to Batemans Bay is the pick, with Big Game fishing out of Narooma to beach fishing and swimming, historical sites and the mountains right there, 5 minutes away, well worth checking out, and a few local members from the Forum to help if needed, Regards Frank.
A nice jaunt through Mt Beauty, past Falls Creek to Omeo, then down to Mallacoota.
Return up through Eden, Snowies, Tumabarumba.
There's not a lot of challenging 4WD work, but it is some great country in summer.
All good suggestions. He's been to Robe many times. Ditto the high country. Last couple of Christmases he's been to Bermagui. He's decided that Birdsville is too hot ( see, I breed bright kids). So, is looking at places like the Big Desert. To complicate matters, he needs to take his mutt. Doesn't want to do any heavy 4WD stuff and will be towing a camper.
