    The Toyota Invasion

Well, there's a second Toyota in the driveway - well, next doors driveway but she's away at the moment.

No 1 Son wanted an auto to start learning in as he was having difficulty with the clutch in the X-Trail (it was a pig and took up very quickly) so he asked me to hunt down a cheap auto for him to learn in.

Knowing that late 90's Camry's go to about 400KKM before dying I looked at what was around. After looking at a few in the last week and not finding one I thought would need minimal intervention for a RWC I found one just listed yesterday that was close to where I was working so I called up and dropped by.

Well, I almost walked away - it was an ex company runabout that the directors Dad had been using up the farm since it's company duties were finished with and to say it was filthy is an understatement.

Anyhow, as I was there and it had a weeks rego left on it I took it for a drive - and was surprised by how well it drive. A good look over it showed nothing major that I can find wrong and everything works - it's the Vienta model so all the bells and whistles, and the V6 engine.

Looking through the log book, it's a one owner - bought by the company in 1999 and has a full service history up until 20,000KM ago when his old man got it (it has been serviced since then by the old man).

Documents show a trans service 60,000 ago and a new timing belt and water pump around 50,000 ago.

It has 4 almost new tyres but needs a windscreen and a tail light plus all fluids changed so I know where it's at.

All this for the princely sum of..... $1,200....

So with RWC and rego and a few bits done should be around 2,500 hopefully.

Bargain IMO despite being grotty and probably thrashed for some time.

Oh, and ABS and Airbags too so not the unsafest vehicle he'll drive (that will be the Series 3 or my 101...)

I hear ya! He'll be getting his licence in a manual as he needs to drive the series 3 I'm building for him. - and the 101 if I'm kind enough to lend it to him....

He just wants something to be comfortable to clock some hours up in.

Oh, and it's only got 218,000KM on it.

Looks good in the pics after a wash but it needs some TLC - the paint has a lot of pin striping and light scratches in it.

I'll bring my Camry around. We'll swap the plates.

    Do you think he'll notice?

Cams exact words to his reply can't be printed here without breaching the rules, but in short I believe he would indeed notice...

Well, after a lot of procrastinating by no 1 Son, he finally realised he actually wants his licence so finally got around to helping me get a RWC. Needed a few things you’d expect from a 20 year old car, but total cost of around $500 in parts (including all new fluids and filters) wasn’t too bad. Windscreen, lower rear control arm bushes, CV boots, a rear tail light and a high beam relay.

Total cost for car, full service, all new fluids and filters, auto service, RWC, 12 months reg and third party insurance while he’s on his L plates was just short of $2,500. Pretty cheap motoring IMO.

So all registered now and done it’s first decent trip - Sunbury to Lakes Entrance and back and it ran beautifully and returned just under 9 ltrs per 100KM which I think is ok from a 20 year old V6. Mostly highway km but around 120 town km on that tank as well. Son sure is happy with it and clocked up around 11 hours driving in the last week in it. 😊👍

Even SWMBO said it was ok for an old car (it’s actually quieter and smoother than her little pocket rocket) 😁

That little engine is a beauty. Similar tech to the UZ series V8 that last forever...
The Isuzu 110. Solid and as dependable as a rock, coming soon with auto box😊
The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈
