What a stupid thing to do, What happens if the area they are working in doesn't have a signal regardless of if there is a power outage or not?

Indeed. Stupid is an understatement.

BTW police stations generally aren't manned during an emergency.

Oh and satellite phones don't work in heavy smoke either.

People will die because of **** decisions on comms by the government. So no power and no air con will be the least of your worries.

depends on the station, but if **** hit the fan, everyone is out on the trucks.

We should not be having ANY power outages. NONE whatsoever.
I've said before, whilst I've got nothing against "renewables' nothing at all, I want my power supply to be continuous, and if coal fired generators are required for that to be the case, until a reliable, sufficient & proven replacement is up & running, then so be it,....and if that includes building new similar generation as many other countries are doing, especially as we have massive coal supplies, then again, so be it.
Power "outages" to individuals (like me!) are simply "inconvenient",...the cost to industry and anyone relying upon power for their livelihood is inestimable.

Nup - in Victoria police do not yet have digital comms in some rural areas.

The problem is caused by coal power stations such as Hazelwood and Liddel being worn out and not replaced, not by renewables.
The question is, what's the best way to replace the dispatchable power previously provided by those stations.
The answers have unfortunately been made political, when they should just be a matter of rational and logical decision-making.

No, the problem isn't worn out power stations, the problem is 25 consecutive years of state government procrastination in replacing them.

They were (mostly) sold cheaply to private industry, whose job it is to replace them with something suitable when they're worn out or no longer economical to run.

Why should governments replace power stations that they dont own anymore. And why should private industry build something when their is no planing laid out for the future.
Add to that fosal fuel is becoming more expensive and renewables cheaper. What works now and be cheap in 20 years could be unviable due to cost, and not due to royalties or carbon prices but due to maintenace and cost to get materials to burn vs something you install and leave.

Atm our best bet is stored hydro to get through peak periods
