Craig, that is exactly what happened at a few city councils recently. Whether you agree with it or not, they declared they were getting rid of Australia Day citizenship ceremonies after consulting only a handful of biased people (councillors and some of their friends). When questioned about their polling numbers they got massively caught out on live TV and looked like absolute idiots....
I reckon a lot of those surveys are full of holes and I don't rate them very highly. Plus there is the lag with their results, ie up to 5 or more years, so you would not be talking about the reliability of current vehicles.

Remember the 100 Series front suspension weld failures? Spoke to a guy who had the vehicle hit the ground at the state limit, Rip the wheel free and leave him stranded.
He didn’t see it as a problem because it was fixed under warranty!

My work Hilux has left an oil stain on my driveway far worse than any of my land rovers - it was like the Exxon Valdez. When I called Toyota they said they couldn't look at it straight away as an oil leak wasn't considered urgent - I drove it to the dealers the next day and it had around a litre of oil left in it by the time I arrived - I went in an asked the service manager to take a look, by the time we walked out there was a puddle about 50cm wide and growing - he nearly **** himself running for the spill kit.[biggrin]
As it turned out the oil filter was about to fall off - they had serviced it 3 days prior - so hardly a failure, more like a first year Apprentice who didn't get his work checked by a Mechanic, but it makes me smile to think the biggest oil slick I've had at my house was from a Toyota when the driveways full of Land Rovers... I remember in 2010 we did the Canning Stock Route, 3 x D2 & 1 x 100 series L/Cruiser , the 100 series had more problems then the 3 x D2's put together , but yet about 3/4's of the way thru the stock route we met some people who had sold their land rover's because everyone told them they wouldn't make it - you can guess what they bought.....
I bet every non land rover owner has either read or heard of AdrienS and his endless list of drama's with his D2 that was stuck in Halls Creek for god knows how many days and ended up getting flat bedded last I read of the thread. That will far out weigh every story of the reliable Land Rovers that people have. His story is on the forum here if you haven't read it.
Personally if you are letting things like that upset you , you need to find some better reading material.
PS - there were a few on this forum who questioned the trip in a D2 as well .
